Well, It's been a while..........

My DS4 got stolen and burnt out almost a fortnight ago, so I decided to get a stop gap car for now. I was looking on eBay and found a 52 plate 2.0HDi Estate with full service history, an A4 envolope full of receipts. The car has had both the timing and cam belts done, The water pump replaced, new Discs, pas and calipers and 4 newish tyres. All for £500

Surprisingly, it doesn't need to much to get it presentable:

It needs a proper radio - Done
The drivers door window switch is faulty - Done
Bulbs replacing in the centre console - Done
Tailgate glass needs freeing off - Done
Decent alloys to replace steelies and trims. Done
Replace Steering wheel (it's pitted to hell) - Done
Fit Bluetooth - Done
Headlamps are very poor (Need adjusting) - Done

AirCon top up
Tailgate struts need replacing.
Cruise control to be fitted.
Replace interior mirror with monochrome one

Sounds a good buy Steve. I think you will like it, and it may not be such a stop gap as you think. I've found now, if you get a good sub £1000 car it's great. You honestly don't worry about it the same if it gets dirty, or a little "trolley bump" or the likes. My Leon cost me £600 it's a cracking runner, and I can do the not care about it. Not care so much that my son is away to his work in it today while I take his car for mot. It's the first time I have willingly let him take my car due to his reputation for breaking them lol. Hope it's a good one for you.

As Davie so rightly says, at least you won't be too worried about little knocks and scrapes to the replacement.

That's a nice c5. The exact same inside as my first one was, and it still ranks as the comfiest car I ever had. I've no idea what those wheels came off of. I'm presuming they are 15" which were standard size but look too small for the car. They suit 16 or 17" wheels, even 18" I had 18"on my second c5. I have a set of suitable 17" wheels for sale [emoji4]

Steve, I had an issue with the N/S/F window not automatically raising from the driver door switches (I had to hold the switch while it raised). When I popped the Lexia onto it I was shown that the switch was at fault (and not, thank goodness, wiring). You can (with care) get that unit out from the door card (half a dozen plastic expansion clips), just by lifting it out. There are two latching plugs, so disconnect them (same size and shape of plugs, but one has 3 wires, the other has 6). Now, on the face where the connectors are, there are 9 clips holding the bottom cover in place. Once you have got the bottom cover off you should be able to drop out the circuit board (and rubber contact membrane). On my board there was some crud over the contact that managed the N/S/F automatic function. I cleaned the switch and membrane with proper contact cleaner, re-assembled the switch, and voila! I had a fully functional door unit.

I see that you do not have Cruise Control. This is easy to add, but you do need to check the brake pedal first (on the N/S, believe it or not!). Drop the carpet down from under the glove box, and you should see the foot brake transfer mechanism. There are three possible configurations (the last two will mean you do not need to buy anything for the brake pedal). The first possibility is two pairs of wires, and the white plug is connected to a white switch, and the red plug is hanging loose. The second possibility is similar to the previous option, but there is a red switch fitted, and the red plug is connected to it. The third possibility is all 4 wires are in one plug, connected to one switch. If you have option one you will need to buy the red switch and gubbins (this is a Push to Break switch, to disconnect the CC when the pedal is pressed). I do not know how much it is (my C5 had the four wire switch option), but I do know that, when you fit it, you should check that a light touch will open the circuit.

I bought a CC stalk (and lower steering wheel cowling) for £15 from a scrap yard (the Citroen stalk has a rotary switch with two positions (On and Off), while the Peugeot one has three positions (On, Off, and Limit (which does not work on a Citroen)), so don't get that one, as Limit is ignored). Fitting it is a doddle (if I can do it so can anybody else!). Pull out the steering wheel (gives more room to work) and undo the two Torx screws. The cowling should drop down a bit, but it can be tricky to remove it. On the other side from the audio control stalk is a cover that unclips. Remove the cover, and slide in the CC stalk until it latches (it should be a secure fit, with no movement). Connect up a Lexia (diagnostics port is in the glove compartment, fuse area), and (within the driver switch area (IIRC) there should be an option that says something like Cruise Control, with two options (Absent and Present). Change it to Present, save that, and then check that the Lexia can see the stalk status changing as to try it out (hold down the buttons, rotate the switch). Assuming it does, put the cowling back on (but make sure to get the leatherette cover properly fitted, otherwise the lower cowling won't fit back together).

Cruise Control does not work below 40MPH or in any gear other than 4th or 5th (as far as I can remember).

Yes Cruise is on the list of jobs, so thanks for that. I do find it a bit under powered and I need to get my Lexia sorted, so that is a job for this weekend, once Lexia is done, I'll crack on with the other stuff.

Damm ive two types of c5 alloys you could of had steve... vtr 16 inch and mk.1 2.2 hdi sx type..

Window switchs a common problem.. sometimes opening them up and cleaning the rust from the pcb can do it... i think all c5 have all switchs and wiring already in.. just needs the engine ecu and bsi switching on.. be aware theres no cruise info on the dash.. ie speed set etc.. its done by human memory on mk.1s...
