Retro fit C8 reverse sensors

Post by ozfish1969 »

I'm looking to retro fit some aftermarket reverse sensors to my C8 (2006 reg) as it does not have any.

Looking on line, some suppliers are claiming that the C8 is 'can-bus' and therefore needs a kit which is can-bus compliant, and some suppliers make no mention of it !

Anybody have an idea as to which is right, i.e is the C8 can-bus or not ?

Thanks in advance.

Ok, so the C8 came in a CAN / VAN and full CAN version later on. The way to tell is from the following picture (click and it will zoom up). Which of the stalk configurations do you have and also how many ignition key settings do you have - this will tell you what you have.

Incidentally, I have checked with Citroen's national accessory locator and they don't list a parking sensor accessory for the C8. That's not to say you won't be able to get one that works though. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick reply,

Turns out mine is full canbus as only three stages on the ignition.

My thought with an aftermarket sensor kit was to wire it into the reverse light but i'm thinking that a 'non canbus' kit would upset the system or am I wrong.
Once I find the link to the kit I'll post it for reference.

The wiring systems really need to be CAN friendly in this case otherwise they can upset the signals being sent along the multiplexed network and hence other systems on the same network may be affected. Try and find a CAN enabled one first.

I've had a look at these - they supply front / rear or both and have quite a few options:
A basic kit audio only and then audio and a small visual unit - but they are recessed sensors - but they do offer coloured ones to match a lot of cars - including some of the those really nice C8 colours!
http://www.parkingsensors.co.uk/product ... ors-dps455
They are Canbus compatible too.
Here is the CANBUS PDF link for the C8:
http://www.tradingdirect.co.uk/canm8/Ci ... -%20C8.pdf

The mid range one with a small display that sits at the rear is £59, The other thing is they offer a mobile fitting service (£85 for the rears) - payable on the day, so good if you don't want to be bothered with the hassle.

Thinking that one could buy original Obstacle Detect Electro Unit with OEM spares for sensors. Connect it and change detect unit PRESENT via Lexia tool...?
Would work like original.

I fitted a set of these to the Meriva.

Work perfectly. Only an audio warning but do you really need more?

Got a set of the cheapy ones on the Berlingo, which is CAN. They work fine, and have done for 6 years.. Just a simple wire into the reverse lamp feed. Fitted the same to the Meriva recently but I have no idea about it's electrics, but they work..

"Do you really need more?" I HATE those audio units, they kick in far too early & by the time they might be useful & you're really needing to concentrate (like the last 4 - 6") they are so loud & insistent that you can't think straight.

It depends on how the audio units manage the sound. My company van (with no rear vision; back has no glass) uses an audio warning. The volume does not change, but the beeps get closer together the closer you approach an object. A continuous tone means a couple of inches at most to an obstruction.

Mine don't. Nor do they get louder. I also prefer to actually look behind me and use them as a guide, rather than rely on some flashing diagram on the dash..

I recall one occasion when I had cause to thank those reversing sensors. I was parking my company car of the time (a Skoda Octavia Elegance, with audio and visual warning when reversing), and all was clear. Suddenly the reversing sensors started beeping very rapidly (I was looking out of the rear windscreen), so I trod heavily on the brakes. A few moments later a small child came into view (through a side window), small enough that I could never have seen them through the rear windscreen. This child was being chased by an adult with a horrified, relieved expression on her face.

I also once saw (at Somerfield, Chipping Norton) an off roader reversing, too late for me to give a clear warning. This vehicle knocked down a parking attendant. Fortunately he was not badly hurt, but both he and the driver were badly shaken.

The beep-only versions are great. I fitted to both ours.
Rapidity of beeps increases as you get closer; continuous = 30cm or less.
Volume remains constant. If too loud, you can always place a small bit of tape over the sounder, or resite it.
Audio-only has the distinct advantage that you have nothing you need look at, except your mirrors and where you're going.
