The problem you may have is that they may well contain different hardware or software inside the units. This can make a difference when they talk to other ECUs on the vehicle.

thaks marc i just wanted to see if another ecu would result in eliminating a problem i may or may not have with the existing ecu the zx is a basic model with no spe at all not even power steering. i just think the the other ecu has more softwear in it that will be uneccessary on the basic model. i don't mind trying it out so long as it can't do any damage

regards

What is your VIN? I'll have a look in case it needs to be matched or not.

And also a change of ECU may render the immobiliser inoperative if the ECU and any transponders are (one-time) paired...

Yes, as Jim mentioned, looking on the docs you have the TU3MC engine with Bosch MA 3.0 Injection System. The docs are specific about not replacing the existing ECU with an earlier version ECU on some variations, but when replacing the ECU it does mention using the ELIT to unlock the anti theft system first before the new ECU can be coded and recognised. I should add after reading through, that under the Bosch specific ECU, there don't seem to be any of the following procedures listed - so I wouldn't like to say.....
It is necessary to reinitialise the engine ECU, after any of the following operations :
  • Clearing of the faults
  • Disconnection or replacement of the ECU
  • Disconnection or replacement of the battery
  • Disconnection of the ECU supply relay(s)
  • Downloading a program to the ECU
  • Replacement of the idle regulation stepper motor
  • Replacement of the throttle potentiometer
Failure to reinitialise the engine ECU, after any of the above operations, will cause the following driving defects :
  • Engine hesitation
  • Engine cuts out when returning to idle
  • The engine stalls on starting
There is an Auto Adaptation procedure mentioned above that I've replicated here in case this helps with the existing problem: This is for the Bosch system:
10.2. Auto-adaptation of the richness
Engine hot, water temperature exceeding 60 °C.
Road test the vehicle for a minimum of 15 minutes, making use of the various engine speeds, in particular :
  • 2500-3500 rpm
  • Idling speed
  • Full load (for 2 seconds)
10.3. Fault reading
Correct any possible faults.
Clearing of the faults.
Restart the ECU initialisation procedure (operation 10.2).

So there are quite a few Injection ECU variations - including the Bosch. Each has different parameters to initialise - so I would be a bit careful about putting a non-matching ECU in place. But on the face of it, there is not specific initialisation I can find for your specific ECU apart from the Auto Adaption part listed at 10.2.
