Problem changing down gears ?. C5 2005 1.6Hdi

First time this yr and sure as eggs are eggs it wont be my last visit this Im sure Happy New yr one and all.
Ok my 2005 C5 1.6Hdi Estate 166k on the clock -New Engine change 60k full service history.
My issue is changing down gears is weird the gear stick very floppy and hard to locate gears from 5-4-3rd and some times a bit clunkey in first as if it slips out of gear before i start off. . I thought it may be the clutch as it has done about 106k on it . All info welcome and thank you in advance .

If its the clutch dragging it will go into gear OK without the engine running but will be difficult or crunch with it running. Sounds more like the linkage. I had a problem with a 406 that wouldn't always go into reverse which was due to the end of the outer cable having come adrift from the ferrule, I clamped it up with a pair of mole grips and never had any more trouble.

Would that be the linkage on the gear box or under the gear stick ?. thanks for your input .

Mine was a the bottom front but don't know if the C5 uses the same gearbox, my 406 was a 2.0.HDi.
