C5 Tourer 2008 V6 HDi Suspension fault

Post by chris_reade »

I'm having a problem with the suspension on the above car; it's sunk down to low level, with the Suspension Faulty warning. Pump does not seem to be operating at all, and I want to check the Maxi fuses. Can't find them on this vehicle at all! Anybody know where they are?

Suspecting a pump failure at this point. Possibly a LDS leak as well, but can't really investigate this fully unless I can get the car raised. Stuck out in Spain at the moment. Thanks in advance!

It's the X7, early one I guess. Battery is in rear n/s panel, no fuses anywhere near there.

ALWAYS make sure you are SAFE under a CITROEN....they CAN KILL YOU A jack is NOT SAFE

Have you checked the rear dog bone ?
Why was it in the low position, was the car jacked OFF the wheels without the LDS cap removed ?
Where is the leak, front or rear |?

Thanks for that. I'll see if I can locate the fuse. What actually happened, was that I raised the suspension whilst away from home, because I'd detected a clunking sound from around the o/s front wheel. Car raised normally. Couldn't see anything, so left car raised for an hour or so. When I returned to it, I dropped the suspension to normal level, and started home. On the way I got the 'Faulty suspension, 90 kph max' message and so continued home slowly. By the time I got there, over some speed bumps, the car was very low to the ground and now won't raise at all.

Hasn't been jacked at all.

Only possible leak I can see so far is under the LDS tank. There's no fluid visible in the tank even after adding a litre of LDS. No response from the pump under any conditions.

Thanks for the advice about getting underneath, I'm well aware of that one. Can't even get a jack under it at the moment.

Sorry, I don't know what the rear dog bone is!

Thanks for taking the time to help. It's much appreciated.

NP

The rear "dog bone" is the connector between the height corrector and the rear roll bar, look under from the rear, you can see it in the middle of the anti roll bar. See if has popped off or is broken.

DO NOT move the clamp on the roll bar which is No3 in the image and its bolt 4

Well, not getting anywhere, all fuses seem to be OK, even maxi ones on the battery, dog bone seems Ok, (one each side?). Still nothing from the pump. Think I shall have to get some professional help, there's a main dealer a few miles away. What do you think about moving the car. There's still some bounce present and the front wheels clear the arches. Since the STOP light isn't on, can I go by the 90kph limit on the display. Thanks again for your advice. I'll post the cause (and solution) of the problem when I get it sorted.

What I might try (if I were careful) were to lower the suspension to full low, check the LDS level was correct, and, (when it was) set the suspension to normal height. If it did not move it could be because the pump needs priming. Citroenxm has done this bit by making sure the neck was clean, and then (sealing his lips around the neck) blowing into it. The system only needs around 7PSI to prime the pump.

As I said, the pump's not even trying to work. When I took the LDS cap off to check levels, it was pressurised then.

On V6's there are height sensors for every tyre, so there must be two of them on both ends.

It's looking more like the pump / motor - if you're not hearing the pump engage, then I would not be suspecting height correctors at this point yet, coupled with the loss in LDS fluid. You obviously have a leak somewhere. I would be very careful about travelling too far if at all - as you may have a small amount of LDS in the system - and may even not be enough for the pump to operate - which could be another reason why it is quiet - so running it 'dry' may do more damage - hard to say. With something like this, I would recommend getting it towed to a garage with the necessary expertise with the modern hydraulic system of the X7.

Have you checked you steering rack for a leak - this is a well-known issue on the X7 on models from 2008 to about 2013/14 when a replacement rack with a new design was brought in. That also shares the same LDS fluid with the suspension system from the same reservoir, although it is pumped separately and there are several types of system depending on engine and model. If the rack has been leaking, that may have caused an LDS fluid drain from the tank.

For future reference, the V6 engines as Xantippa mentioned don't have the front and rear Height sensors on the axles unlike the 4 cylinder engines, they have one on each wheel and a separate suspension ECU (CSS) used in the C6, but without the AMVAR system. They are called wheel travel sensors and feed their infor direct to the CSS computer to make the necessary ride height adjustments and feed this info onto the other systems via the BSI. Here is a picture of a rear one for reference:
