Does anyone have a decent idea of if its likely to be the plug itself down inside the column shroud? before I go ripping that off and not being able to get it back on again

Xantia wheel controls acting possessed
When I changed the Matrix I thought i'd fixed this little bug, but it seems to have cropped back up again (potentially when I took it off to try and sort the dash bulbs). Basically the wheel controls work perfectly unless you're turning (or if I were to try and use them stationary with the wheel turned), anything past 90degrees and it starts skipping CD's/tracks/seeking stations as though its shorting out somewhere. the wires/ribbon inside the wheel are fine (i've took the bag off to look).

Not come across this myself Stu but Im sure that the problem lies somewhere between the buttons and the connector. I'd look at the connector then source a replacement ribbon if possible I think.

Yes the ribbon connectors can kink and wear over time:

Re: Xantia wheel controls acting possessed
The odd thing is the ribbons move with the wheel. Although it seems to be that way as i took it out and pressed the buttons while turning the clockspring manually and it worked fine which then points to the buttons being at fault!

Re: Xantia wheel controls acting possessed
I don't see how the buttons can work one minute and not the next - they only make contact or not - in either case, Part 8 is a whole replacement unit Stu - they aren't separate. 10 are just the bracket supports, but 8 is a complete ribbon and button set (6239 99) NFP of course.
The only one I could see was sold - but some good photos here:

Maybe a good time to put your soldering skills to use!

Re: Xantia wheel controls acting possessed
By buttons I meant the ribbon haha. I had the wheel removed and took the board out, maneuvered it in a way where I could plug the controls in and moved the clockspring around while messing with the volume (the one thats always having issues) and it worked fine. I know they work by varying resistance so maybe theres a problem that only becomes apparant when the whole thing (wheel and bag) is fitted.

Re: Xantia wheel controls acting possessed
If you get stuck on this there is a spare leather steering wheel (Mk1.1) complete with said ribbon in my lockup in North Wales. The only issue is you can't possibly have it until I visit Wales which will be mid March.

Well it's my spare, but if your's is broken and mine isn't you're welcome to it. You can have the leather wheel, I don't need it. The whole thing was kept for the ribbon cable and the clock spring. I can probably meet you on my way back down here in March, prity sure I pass through Cheshire on route.
