SOLVED 206 - tips on defogging without AC

Post by rzepek2pl »

Hi again. I know I'm making a lot of posts, but what I've fixed is a tip of the iceberg. Now I just want you guys to tell me some advice on how to defog the windows from the inside. My car should have air conditioning, but it was removed before I bought her (and I didn't notice that before buying :/ ). I tried smearing a pealed potato on the glass. It does work but I would have to do this every other day. Anyone knows how to deal with foggy windows on a budget?

The best trick I have found is to get the glass spotlessly clean. Condensation normally needs a seed point, so if there aren't any it takes longer to form.

Was the A/C removed, or merely disabled?

The AC components are removed. All that's left of it is the button. :P
I'll try your trick. Thanks. :D

Models (apart from the top spec) with sunroofs and the base models (UK market at least) do not have A/C fitted. Base models in other EU countries (outside UK) do have A/C though.

Regarding helping defogging, having a window open a fraction (say 1cm) does help a little. This is similar to older cars with the opening quarterlight windows.

Clean glass helps as above. If you smoke this can also 'coat' the inside of the glass which does not help that much.

With the heater itself, have it on hot obviously but initially with a stone cold engine do not have the blower on full speed, stay on 1 or 2 at most as otherwise you are taking away too much initial warmth from the engine and it will take a little bit longer to heat up which is what you want. Have it on 1 or 2 speed just for the first minute of running to help it actually get a tiny bit of warmth first then by all means increase the blower speed.

Talking of warmth, although its not common a lazy thermostat (does not fully close) will also add a delay to the warmup.

I tried opening a window a little during driving. But I can't use it when it's raining or snowing and it does a lot recently. I don't smoke, so that's not a problem. I barely use heater on more than 2.

Keep the carpets dry. If damp, they will release moisture as the car warms up, and this ends up as condensation on the glass. Use rubber mats over carpets, if not already there, to keep them dry.
Try putting the heater control on hot demist (screen clear) and crack open a rear window by a couple of cm. This will encourage an airflow through the car.

That's a very good point.

I'd also check the door seals too, a tiny hole or tear in the seal (lower area especially) does not help as it will cause it to mist up a bit when its stood overnight in some cases.
