What is this & where can I get one?

It's quite a while since I posted so let me mention first that I live in Northern Thailand and I, or my Mechanic have already searched within the country.

The best translation I can get is "oil cooler" and this one seems kaput.
It's from a 1996? ZX 2.0I 8 valve which I've recently acquired.
Any clues on where to search or find such an item would be appreciated.

I would need the item posting, either to my UK forwarding agent or to my Thai address.
All thoughts, advice or leads gratefully appreciated!

BTW - VIN appears to be VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff], can anyone help please?

That's a sandwich plate. It fits between an oil filter and backplate (usually the engine block itself) and allows the oil to be diverted to an oil cooler radiator or heat exchanger.

Using Your VIN, I've pulled up the diagram, BUT, unfortunately it doesn't list this as an available part. If you look at No. 14 on the diagram it shows the oil filter insert, just after the Oil Filter (1). If you follow the line back behind 14 you can see the part attached - but there is no number / part for this. It is commonly referred to as an oil cooler.

Looking for the part number on the item has produced a few results - none of them cheap though!

They were probably only fitted for hot climate countries.
There are lots of similar items available for other models, e.g. http://www.ebay.com/sch/Oil-Coolers/460 ... catda=true but you would need to check the dimensions.

I had a check on Citroen parts too. It says that an engine oil cooler (Engine Oil-Water Distribution Chamber) was not fitted to ZXs.
Putting in your VIN number, it lists your car as XU10J2 engine (2.0i 4-speed auto), and "Without oil cooler".

Your photo above shows a ZF part number.
If you just throw that number into Google, there are a number of suppliers who list exactly that part.

The oil cooler is a common item, and fitted to many cars. If the coolant (antifreeze) is neglected, the item can corrode internally, and leak. That can cause engine oil to be injected into the car's water cooling system.

There are a good few of coolers around which look very much like that one, but be careful, because they vary in thickness (height) and central hole diameter. There is a tubular "bolt" which goes through the centre, holds the cooler in place on the engine block, and takes the screw-on oil filter element. You must have the correct tubular bolt for your cooler.

Thank you for all your helpful posts - I'm stunned by the prices quoted for this damned thing. We are now enjoying our cold season with daytime temperatures the the mid twenties - when it gets hot we have weeks at a time in the upper 30's - so I guess a cooler for the transmission is necessary. Just wonder if anyone has ideas on a workaround for this? Labour costs here are low so another approach may give a less expense solution?

I just realised that this is a transmission oil cooler for a 4hp14 or 4hp18 transmission, not an engine oil cooler.

It is shown on the transmission page of service.citroen and the citroen part number is 227523 (NFP of course).

Some of them may have used an oil/air cooler which would have connected via an adapter to the same point on the transmission case.
This gives me the idea that you could get a machinist to fabricate an alloy block that replaces the damaged cooler, but has pipe fittings to go to an oil-air cooler that can probably be obtained at reasonable cost. In the original assembly the hot transmission fluid comes up through the hollow bolt and flows back through an orifice in the transmission casing. That last is exactly what I have on our 2.5 XM, to replace the ghastly Valeo lump, for engine oil cooling.
Ours is a Setrab cooler, take-off and hoses from these folk:

That's a nice clear picture Marc, I've often found that an exploded diagram in a parts list is much more useful than a workshop manual.

It can be a bit hit and miss Gibbo - some of the diagrams are really poor, requiring an electron microscope so identify!

Thanks chaps, with the understanding gained here we were able to locate a suitable replacement unit from a 'breaker' in Bangkok. Problem solved. Car mobile again.
