SOLVED 206 - speedometer 'dies' while driving

Post by rzepek2pl »

Salut! I own a 2001 Peugeot 206, and I'm her 8th owner, so there's no way she's flawless. My problem is that when I'm driving, the speedometer tends to 'die' - it just falls down to zero and jumps back to the current speed randomly. This happens 2-3 times during a half-an-hour drive. I don't know what causes it (I'm sure its a problem with electronics, duh) and when it triggers - I THINK it happens when I accelerate quickly, but as I said it's mostly random. Anyone came across such problem? Any way to fix it? Thanks a lot in advance.

Speed/distance sensor on the gearbox, or connections to it, would be first thing to check.

Thanks, Chris. Since it's the middle of the night, I won't do anything, but I'll take look at it (if I can reach it without a mechanic) in the morning. :)

If you find the connectors are dirty use proper contact cleaner (not WD40) and a toothbrush to clean them up.

Good thing I haven't ordered it yet. I just checked the sensor. Turns out the connectors were dirty as hell. I'll see if it helped when I drive. Thanks, James. :D

After two weeks of testing clean sensor, the speedometer works perfectly fine. Thank you Chris and James! Problem solved. :D

My TD speedo has started to read double the speed, stick there for a short distance and then jump back down erratically. Might give this a go. Where, on a BE3 gearbox is the speed sensor electric connector?

Same place.. On the RH driveshaft side of the final drive housing... Get under (bearing in mind all Hydraulic Citroen safety advice!), follow the RH driveshaft into the gearbox and just above where it enters you'll see the speed sensor and it's connector..

It normally has a little silvery fabric 'coat' around it for a bit of protection.
