Have you confirmed your part / replacement part number: If you post your VIN, I'll check it for you unless you're sure this is the one from info on my old post.
As you probably already know Citroen will only replace the whole thing.

There are a load here - but the part numbers are few and far between - so I would be a bit wary as you won't want to be putting the old failing type of design back in I guess. At least you have the part numbers, but if you want me to check, let me know.

We didn't determine that in the last debate on the fiasco John, but we know that there is a replacement part listed against a 2011 model so these were obviously also fitted with the failing earlier types and I suspect even later years were too.

No problems, I've checked the parts for your VIN and they are as listed previously:
Original Rack was PSA Part Number 4001 W3 (the faulty design)
The replacement Part is now: 9801415480

Now here's the shocking bit. I have just had a look on Citroen service to make sure these are 100% accurate and to get the prices. The replacement part is nearly double the original part!
Prices from Citroen:
Original Faulty Part: £681.37 or £817.64 inc. VAT
New Replacement Part: £1,141.93 or £1370.32 inc. VAT

So I don't know what mods they have made, but at nearly double the price of the original I would hope they are gold plated!

So with the labour rates, that's why it's north of couple of grand job to do.

Some people have had a reconditioned rack, but it has gone on to fail within months. The thing to watch here is that although some will give you a 12 or 18 month warranty, it won't cover all the labour time in getting the thing out and back in again if you have to return it.... They'll usually only cover the cost of a replacement rack, so you'll need to factor that in unless doing it yourself.

I think the reason why it is difficult to search for the replacement part number is that these will be relatively recently fitted to cars that have had the faulty one replaced - and therefore shouldn't fail. I'm guessing that finding a modified rack with the new part number will be only likely to come from newer written off accident cars - and you would have to ensure that the exact part number matches. So often on the bay they interchange part numbers and you may end up with one that is not correct. The part numbers I have given you are the correct ones for your car. There were several rack types produced for the C5 X7, so important to get the right one for your engine.

4001 W3 is available - but has the design fault and if getting one of these from a breaker - it may well fail as well. The damage caused by the water ingress through the pinion and deterioration of the seals causes the inner seals to go too (which you can't see externally) so is a bit of Russian roulette.
9801415480 is the correct, modified design.
