Dw8 loses power

Post by G75 »

Hi new to the forum. Looking for help on 51plate citroen dispatch dw8 1905cc engine. Just had to fit a new alternator and starter motor to my van and it was fine for around a week. Now every time im driving it, it loses power while im driving.
As soon as i turn the key itll start again no problem. It also starts and will idle no problem it just loses power while im driving.
Any help would be great

Hi and welcome to the Forum. From experience, it may help if you post up your VIN, as there are a multitude of combinations of these vehicles and this might save a bit of time down the line.

No problems - they have so many cab types and variations - anyway I've completed a small extract of the Model and engine characteristics here that might help other members in providing some assistance.

First things I'd check on a DW8 are the air/fuel filters and the accelerator cable.

Also check the vaccum operated butterfly in the air intake, make sure it's fully open & not flapping about then temp clamp its vaccum pipe of & see if the fault is still there.

I had this issue on a 206 and fixed it by pulling the vac hose out of the egr flap on the inlet.

Not at all. It did seem to be running better and ran slightly longer before it lost power but after 5 mins driving it lost power again

It is usually the EGR on these its a common issue unfortunately. The design of it on this unit was not brilliant it seems. I suspect it actually is because it receives a bit too much 'exhaust' gas sometimes and the inlet tract design clogs nicely over time.

It can jam open a bit too but if you get it in time disabling the vacuum alone is enough, but going from what you've done to the pipes its not that.

The other reasonably common is a blocked cat (can be intermittent) especially if its breaking internally as it can randomly block.

When you say "lose power" do you mean it actually has no "go" or does it just drop to idle or does it cut out and stop dead (as if someone pulled the key out) ?

Hi andy thanksfor the input. Yes when im driving it just loses all power as of someone has pulled the key then if i put my foot on the clutch it cuts out and all the power lights come on.
Aswell as this when i start it ican leave it idle and it will tick over fine it just cuts outwhen its being driven

You're going to need to get it scanned then with Diagbox / Lexia to pick up what code(s) are stored with it actually cutting out there will be something logged.

I could make (random) guesses such as spiking alternator output upsetting the BSi (uncommon) so a code reading session is really the best way forward.
