hi, this is my first post here and ive a problem thats wrecking my head.
car is a 01 c5 2.2d auto estate- surprisingly reliable machine in general. a few months ago a brake failure message was show in the middle disply along with the stop message and a brake red light in the speedo, car still drove fine. turning it on and off removed the problem.
since then it appears more often and until i can slow and stop somewhere-its an auto so i cant turn it off while driving, it still drives fine. also at the same time it sticks in whatever gear its in unless i flick it into manual and change gear then flick it back into auto. and finally very seldom when i turn it off the engine it stays running even with the key out unless i put it into park.
anyway i changed the brake switch- no different changed the handbrake switch-no different, cleaned out and greased the auto mechanism below the lever- no different, changed the brake light bulbs-no different. the reason the fault happens is that the 3 brake lights are sticking on but wont go off- anyone have any ideas as its happening ever 10 minutes at this point? thanks

Re: c5 brakes
Hi and welcome to the Forum.
There have been well documented issues with water ingress into the rear tailgates of the estate and corroding the electrical wiring there, however, your best bet is to get it onto a Lexia for a diagnosis in case it is showing any codes related to the ABS / ESP system or gearbox issue. Any of these can be symptoms and should be checked. If you don't have a Lexia Kit - have a look at members with kits that have said they are willing to help - there are several over there in the Emerald Isle - just send them a private message or an email, where specified.

Re: c5 brakes
I would start by checking the brake fluid level.

Re: c5 brakes
There's also the possibility of poorly arranged brake pad wires rubbing against the rims and shorting, switching on the warning light

Check this out - sounds similar to your issue - fitting brake bulbs the wrong way can also be an issue..scas wrote:thanks for the replies- the brake fluid is fine and ill do a search for the water ingress or would someone have a link?

Re: c5 brakes
problem solved
after fiddling with the wiring i disconnected the left upper light at the connector-it has the brake/tail light in it, no difference, did the other side and the problem disappeared, took out double filament bulb and changed it -problem back. went to scrappers and got an offside upper lamp and all the problems mentioned above are now gone, must have been shorting the 2 circuits somewhere. so many thanks for all the replies and now ill do another topic for my separate problem
