Citroen Picasso, Starting issues

Post by imperial21 »

Hi
my step daughter Picasso is struggling to start in the morning, i went and got her a battery for it, once i found it i see a nice new looking battery, i swapped it over anyway in case and took the old one to be tested, It was tested and found to be perect !!
She says its very slow turning over (even in the summer quite slow), really struggling in the mornings once started ok , i am going to guess that its the starter motor ? its an ex taxi done 230k miles.
Is it on the front of the engine ? i had a feeling its at the back and a pig to get at but i hope i am wrong !

If it's a 90bhp HDi it's at the front of the engine and pretty easy to get to. Best from below, with a helper above.

Well, I have a 110HP C5, and the starter motor is also down at the front. I had to replace mine, and I got a reconditioned one from GSF for around £120, but I also got around £55 back when I returned my old motor in the packaging provided.

With any slow cranking issue its worth checking the earth return side of the wiring (assuming you have checked things like the battery terminals and the +ve to the starter). I'm not sure about the Picasso, but a lot of cars have the earth from the engine block, battery and other things all going to a bolt on the bodywork. I bit of corrosion and it offers resistance to high current on starting. Undo + a good clean can help.

Not just the earth return. The standard overcentre terminal clamps have a habit of losing their strength of grip. Cutting them off and replacing them with proper bolt and nut clamps can sometimes sort a problem out.
