Deep cleaning a MacBook.

Unread post by elma »

I've just had a moment of catastrophe trying to drink water and use my laptop at the same time. I coughed and absolutely covered the screen and keyboard in water. The laptop quite sensibly turned off and is now sitting on the radiator drying. I shall have to fetch my tiny screwdriver from work tomorrow and some contact cleaner to make sure it is dry and de-ionised. I don't know why but I've found the whole thing quite funny until I realised I'm stuck typing on a tablet for at least 24 hours now. Thankfully I'm all backed up if it is drowned and the machine is 6.5 years old so it won't hurt too much.

I would buy some cheap rice and then put it (and the laptop) in a box together. Rice can draw out the moisture quite effectively. If you can (but it is an Apple product, so probably not) remove the batteries.

I can remove the battery but not until tomorrow when I have the screwdriver. I like the rice idea, no better dessicant available so it shall sit in a tub of rice until tomorrow evening.

I've done the same over many laptops and keyboards but normally with me it's tea following a howl at something really funny I've seen, either on here or on facebook...

After a nice sleep in the rice bath my laptop has booted up with no complaints. I probably won't take it apart now because it's working, I'm massively relieved, as time passed I realised how many little notes are in the laptop that I could've done with seeing. I must work out how to link the notepads on the iPad with it just like the safari bookmarks.

Not sure Apple MacBook flavoured rice would taste that nice! Now, apple flavoured rice, that is a different matter.
