Hi Graeme

I swapped my guide tubes relatively recently and they were not overly difficult to remove. A little fiddly though. I seem to remember that the left was easier to remove than the right. After much wiggling I undid the joint between the exhaust manifold and mid-section pipe to gain an extra few inches of wiggle room and this made things much easier. In short then, not difficult, and certainly do-able, but fiddly.

Unless I misunderstand your post, it seems that you are planning to simply change the handbrake cables and reuse the guide tubes. I suggest that this is a little optimistic. It seems to be the case that the heat from the exhaust pipe causes the cable outer to melt and weld itself to the inner surface of the tube, meaning that it is near impossible to remove the cable from the tube. It seems to be pretty well established then that you need to change the guide tubes as well as the cables, which is what I did, meaning that the old guide tubes are effectively scrap (which makes removal easier).

However, if you grease the cable outer when inserting the new cables into the new guides, it might be the case that next time you come to change the cables they will be removable from the guide. I did this and will report back in due course when I next change the cables.
