Installing a tracker on my Xantia

Post by AriGold23 »

Hi everyone.

Having had someone smart enough to hit my car and run two nights ago, leaving me with a broken rear bumper (that was put on brand new 3 years ago and took 6 months to be found and arrive in Portugal) I decided to buy a tracker and install it.

Having installed electric seats by my own I thought installing this little device how hard can it be?

I figured it out that it needs two wires of continuous power negative and positive.

And then I need to know what wire feeds energy to the fuel pump, in order to be able to cut the power of the car if it gets stolen.

Can someone point me out in the good direction? Thanks in advance =)

That doesn't sound like a tracking device - a tracker is usually a locating device using GPS that you track via the web if the car is stolen and can be battery powered or wired in - a simple live and ground.

Otherwise consider getting a car immobiliser fitted if there isn't one already - which there should be. I wouldn't start interfering with the fuel pump wiring.

There is also the legal issue that, if you knowingly disabled the drive to a car while it was being driven (if that is what the device would do) you could be held partly liable for any accident that occurred as a result.
Apologies if I misunderstand your post.

GPS tracker + immobiliser sounds a much better way to go, and would also ensure that your insurance remained valid.

I have installed a device like this on my camper van. It tracks and can cut the engine off too. When you send it the command to stop the engine it wont cut the engine until the speed drops below around 15 kmh.

Wheeler - is that a commercially available device or something you assembled?

They're commonly available, I bought a similar device for my van. It was £35 from Amazon and well worth the price. It would text me if the vehicle was disturbed or moved without my phone present so I could deal with any theft rapidly.

I suspect this type would have a relay to cut off fuel / battery supply and would not have anything to do with the in-tank fuel pump in that case.

Yes it was around £35 from amazon. It has just a small relay designed to interrupt the fuel pump supply, on mine I have it wired to the stop solenoid as its a diesel.
You need a pay as you go SIM card for it & you can set it to alert you if a door is opened, the ignition is switched on or if it is moved a certain distance.
You can also make it do things like activate the horn remotely & it has a small microphone so you can dial in & listen inside the car.

Personally, I would be a bit wary of fitting anything on a full-CAN car unless the unit is certified CAN systems compatible - which in the case of the OP wouldn't be applicable as he has a S1 Xantia.

@AriGold23: Did you not get any wiring instructions with the unit?

Clever gadget. Wonder what the insurance companies' line on these is?

The instructions that came with mines were in Chinglish  but you can get the idea.
As far as a full CAN car is concerned & cant foresee any problems if it is installed correctly, it is actually very basic. You don't need to wire everything up if you don't need it, If all you want is tracking then all it needs is two wires connected, a battery live supply & an earth.

Can you stick a link to the one you bought or a picture please? It should be easier to help with the original question if we know what you have.

I don't think a tracker will help with people crashing into your car and driving off?? I'd be looking at a camera watching the car for that, as what use is you being told your car is still where you left it if someone hits it again?

This type of tracker can be setup to text your phone if anything causes the car alarm to go off. A separate camera is needed if recording is wanted.
