C5 X7 shrieking noise

Unread post by rmunns »

My 2009 auto Hdi 160 occasionally makes a shrieking noise, usually when I have near-stopped at an intersection, then gently accelerating away. I thought it might be the belt (driving power steering, aircon pump etc.) but now I'm not so sure. Could it be auto box fluid-related? I say that because I have no history regarding previous owners having fluid changed. Car at 213 000km (133 000 miles). I've had car 16 months, 10 000 miles, no problems whatever. (Touch wood).

Had that on my (older- Mk 1 C5) - both of them actually.
First was never diagnosed before it went but the replacement was eventually found to have the clutch/freewheel on the alternator seized.
Unfortunately it had gone on so long it took the dual-mass crank pulley with it.
The Polish bloke I use now knew what it was as soon as I drove up to his garage! Others had spent ages trying to find the problem and 'cured' it with belt spray that would last about ten minutes :(

May not be that with yours but I'd be looking in that area, could be a jockey wheel bearing breaking up. If the belt shreds and bits get into the timing belt that would be seriously bad news and it wouldn't be the first time it has happened.

I have the same car and milage / history and do hear a feint noise sometimes, more of a distant quiet whine when under light acceleration .. in fact engine load seems to affect it. . that I wonder/worry its the gearbox.. will do an oil change soon, has to be worth doing really..

We had an awful noise on our C4 which sounded just like the alt belt, but it seemed to come and go at random. I eventually twigged that it was the cooling fan - squealed when it came in with the AC. Knocking off the AC for a few minutes confirmed the diagnosis.

I think there's a special noise reserved for that particular event....

2009 C5 X7 H3+ automatic

Unread post by rmunns »

I've had this car 18 months and have really had few problems, despite a fairly high kilometers (equivalent now 133000miles). But there is one little niggle that I would like to know what it is. The car is automatic and the engine is Hdi, 165PS. I get a squeak noise on accelerating - it only lasts for a second or two and seems to happen when the car is just getting warm (say 5 minutes after starting). But that is not always the case. Also, it seems to happen after I've straightened up after a corner and have just started again (eg when entering another road after joining it at a T-junction). Right or left. And finally, it happens with light throttle openings.
At first I thought vee belt, but I'm unsure how the newer ones sound when they slip. And then again, maybe to do with the auto gearbox. The oil in the box?
Can anyone throw some light on this, please?
