Air intake

Unread post by Sloppysod »

Hi All,
Could someone please look under their bonnet, of the car!!, as I have a query regarding a air intake duct. My car developed and noisy 'clatter', worse than an old Transit. I was think the top end was giving way, (camshaft), anyway upon investigation it is (was) the air intake tube from behind the radiator to air-box, item 3, the two halves were vibrating together, actually the top half was loose.
Now the question is, are the two halves of you ducting joined together, if so how as the diagram does not show any clips.

I've copied and re-uploaded it Stu - your image tag doesn't seem to work with your host, so I've hosted it on my account :-D

I'll check mine in the morning when it's light, but I can't see why they would be in two halves - must be one heck of a shake you have their Stu!

Thanks for the image host, I will have to host them somewhere else instead. Yes it was very Loud. I think it is made in two halves, so it is broke!

Sorry Stu, I almost forgot to check my intake. Mine is in one peice, but you can see the plastic seam between the 2 halves. At some point it seems they have lost a clip that secures the bottom, and they have put a cable tie on instead!

There are no actual clips that hold the 2 halves together - just molded and possibly heat sealed or glued together, which have possibly come apart with some vibration - although how and where the other half would go to is beyond me - it's big enough not to miss - are you sure it's not ended up on the floor area somewhere, on top of the undershield?

The whole thing is secured via a cable tie circled in yellow to the trim above the rad via a plastic loop molded onto the bottom of the air intake.

Marc,
Thanks for looking but you are getting a little confused, (age ?), mine is complete but the top half was flapping about with the vibration, however, jgra1 has lost his top half.

After having another look, you could be right about the two halves being possibly glued together when new. Anyway, as there are no clips available I will have to fix it back together.

Could this be another little 'design fault' that the 2.0 Hdi X7 suffers from and people need to keep a look out for?

I lost the plot years ago Stu!

That's me getting mixed up with John loosing his lower bit and your top bits flapping about! Enough said about that  :-D

Is this something I can look forward to on my car? :rofl2:

I think it is something worth keeping an eye on :eye: .

I made sure this would not be a problem any more today. Both halves of mine are now joined together with small cable ties, I had to drill a small hole through the flanges first. but, I also noticed that the joint from this tube to the Air-box was not secure so I added a jubilee clip to that joint as well.
