If you can hear the motor running when trying to raise the window, it sounds like the regulator cable has snapped. Water ingress via the windows channels and seals gets onto the cable and rusts, eventually causing the cable to weaken and snap - Spraying copious amounts of silicone grease spray into the window channels once a year on all the windows will help repel the water and lubricate and protect the wires, as well as lubricate the windows channels, putting less pressure on the window regulator motors.

Spare cable kits are available from these places amongst others:

Hi Marc, thanks for your reply, I cant hear the motor running just the switch clicking, its the same if I operate the passenger window from the switch on the drivers door, the drivers window works fine.

It may be that the wires in the door hinge have parted. I fixed mine temporarily by moving the position of the wires using s cable tie around the upper door hinge so the wire has to bend upwards when the door is closed, thus remaining connected.. however if i lower the window whilst the door is open the motor acts as though the battery has been disconnected and the windown will only move 1 inch for every press of the button until it is closed and then it will operate normally.
Hope this helps.

So assuming the window motor hasn't burnt out, it could be a broken wire in the passenger door loom as Chris mentions above. If you want the front door stripping procedure (not necessarily to strip the door) it does show the various connectors etc - then just PM your VIN number and an email so I can send the PDF to you.

Hi Marc have PM'd you the requested details and in the meantime I tried what Chris suggested, Jiggled the wires on the drivers door whilst pushing the switch down and Bingo the window went up, but obviously I need a more permanent fix so looking forward to your email, many thanks to you and Chris, much appreciated.

I too need a more permanent solution. But the cable tie over the hinge has worked for over a year. My plan is to replace all the loom wires in the hinge area on the 4 passenger doors while the car is on stands having its strut tops and front pipes replaced. Good luck with yours. Let us know how you get on.
