Xantia 1.9td Coolant Leak

Unread post by beko1987 »

I have noticed a coolant leak from my Xantia this week! Keeping it topped up sorts it out, but at about 1.5l a day, gets boring fast...

I had a look underneath it after driving 18 miles to work, and it was all pretty damp

presumably because whatever is leaking gets thrown around whilst driving. When it was stopped, water was dripping off the sump though. I'm going to have a good look underneath it at the weekend, mainly by having her up on ramps on high, making sure everything is dry, turning it on and waiting for a wet head... but does anyone have any pointers to get me started on where to look? Any common failure points on the 1.9td?

Looking from underneath, the large radiator pipes have water splatter underneath them, the radiator itself seems dry and that's as far as I got whilst dressed in my office clothes! Will top it up before popping to halfords at lunchtime to get an 11mm flare spanner to have the rear height corrector off at the weekend!

I don't think it's ever got too low, as the coolant warning light has not come on, although when I pulled the sensor out before topping it up the other day it was dry (and pretty manky), so a clean up and hope may be in order there. How can I test this short of letting it wee all its coolant out to the point it puts the light on? Does having it out and dry with the car running make it ping on? The handbrake telltale light stopped working this morning too, but I'll have a look in the HBOL for the switch first before worrying about that, the handbrake itself still works so meh
