Power steering - BX (what a surprise!)

Unread post by Rob Marshall »

Wait for the surprise: My powered steering BX has developed stiff steering; and it has got quite bad over the course of only 2 weeks.
It's a TD, but when standing at idle we have lots & lots of power steering. No hesistating or loss at all. On the move it becomes stiff when cornering, so I lose "feel". I think it is quite dangerious.
I tried an experiment of letting the car warm up, then thrashing the engine when the car is standing to 4,600 RPM and then going from lock to lock; result; almost no power steering whatsoever. When allowed back to idle, steering restored.
The only thing I (hope) it may be is the hydraulic belt as I changed it 6,000 miles ago; and it may of stretched and may be slipping. I spoke to a friend of mine who has had several BX's who told me his own car had the opposite problem. No assistance when idling, lots when revved.
Any ideas???

It is sometimes a bit of something behind the ball that lives behind the pressure release bolt on the regulator, consult the B.O.Lies loosen this one and run the engine for a bit, it may move elsewhere in the system. this is why power steering often gets better after an LHM leak.
Goog luck
