605 rear door handle

Post by Sam Skelton »

Hi there,

I'm looking after a mate's 605 SRDT. Since he got it one of the rear doors has been kaput. I had the genius idea that it might have been shut with the child lock on and the outer handle failed - I've managed after a lot of swearing and luck to manipulate the child lock catch, get the door open from inside, and strip it to find the problem.

I can't work out how the outer handle is meant to operate the lock mechanism, so I can't really get any further with it. Has anyone else done this, and can they advise?

I'd have to try to check (at the weekend) but from vague memory its not got a rod or cable between the handle and the lock, its like the end of the outer door handle (the part inside the door) kind of 'lifts' a flat piece on the lock mechanism. Its difficult to describe.

Its not that dissimilar to the 106 rear door lock actually if memory serves (those ones are a right pain actually, fronts=2 min rear=forever)

Bear in mind I'm working from vague memory here so I may be off the mark...
Andy.

Sam Skelton... I know that name from somewhere I'm sure lol (which reminds me, there's a magazine I need to get when we get down the shops)

At least if it's just a tab on the lock that's got the wrong side of it's counterpart on the handle it should be an easy enough fix. Easier than Jag XJ40 ones anyway, that involved making actuating rods from steel to replace the snapped plastic ones. What's the point of my largely unrelated post? Well, nothing really except small consolation if it does turn out to be a pig of a job to sort!

ekjdm14, You might know my name from the XM boards, or some of the stuff I write for a living - freelance motoring journalist. In recent months I've had a Peugeot 305 van and the loan of a Citroen CX - and I'll have my own one day. The 605 (and the SVE I have here too) belong to fellow scribe and old sh*te nutter Jon Burgess, of Classic Car Buyer - who now owns my old van again :-)

The handle looks like there's been a repair in the past to me - if the lock DOES work on a striking tab as spider suggests, then the striking face on the handle itself seems to be a Philips head screw. I'm wondering if it's exerted too much pressure and bent or snapped the striking face on the lock?

Spider, I've got a feel for it now - it's similar to what you said, except that the handle pushes down on the plate on the lock. What I need to do is make them make contact in such a way that the door will open. This is proving difficult!

A replacement lock and handle might be the easiest way.

When I needed a 605-specific part (for an upgrade on my XM), I found it on a french forum http://peugeot605.forumeurs.fr .

They may also be able to give advice on how to fix the existing parts.

The diagram on Servicebox is about the same as the ones in my old tech data anyway, there's nothing more I can really add.

I may have some of the tech instruction / repair data but that will just be how to take it out and put it back. :)

Are you sure the handle is complete and the 'arm' (for want of a better description) is intact ?

Its been a very long time since I saw a 605 as they were very rare here anyway it seemed. Mind you they were a bit pricey when new :o :D

Come to think of it I may of only ever looked in the front door on them.
