V6 alternator

Unread post by Lancaster-c5 »

Hi :)
My alternator has stopped charging it's been on the car since it was born so it's lasted very well.I have looked on the web to find a replacement ,prices range from £29.99 from a scrapper to £450.00 brand new.Question 1,are the Mk 1 & 2 the same alternator.Q 2 some replacements quote different voltages 12v/14v & amperes 90/120/150 A.
Is there a bog standard alternator to fit a series one Xantia.Has any one fitted one recently.?.
The one on the car is a Valeo.
I could just fit a regulator with brushes but the slip rings could we worn.
I want to get replacment to fit when I take the old one out.
Regards Howard :)

All ES9J4 use the same alternator, so Xantia V6, 406 V6 etc, but not much else. Not sure whether the ES9J4S used in the C5 etc uses the same alternator.

They are normally totally reliable unless LHM is getting in from a leaking pump.

Alternator is not hard to replace Howard...

Just drop the A/C Compressor off first to gain access to the front alternator bolts... (16mm).

The cooling nozzle easily clips off to improve access to the electrical connections.

As Mike says, LHM will kill them so of you have any LHM at all getting in the alternator get that fixed at the same time...

Thank you for the replies I am getting one from a 406 .
I have asked them to check the reg unit for decent brush length and slip rings not worn to much. [-o<

Personally Howard, I'd never use a second-hand alternator (nor starter) unless it was refurbished by a reputable outfit first...

It would be a sod if you got one and it soon failed and you had to do it all over again...

Better to rebuild the alternator yourself. New slip ring kits and bearings are available. Guides are on utube.
Replace the clutch pulley while off as they are a service item. All the bits will cost about 70 quid and you have next best thing to the new original item.

The xantia has an old-fashioned solid pulley, one less thing to go wrong.
