Black Grey White smoke on acceleration and changing gears ?

Post by Rochy101 »

Wife tells me tonight while following me , your blowing out gray white and some times black smoke. Dam I had a little issue on the morning when the car would not pass 3000 rpm on acceleration so I stopped and restarted the car and floored it in 1-2-3 until a huge plume of soot out the back end and all was well after that, Not sluggish and no warning lights i just put it down to the eylos fluid burning out. Hahh this car is cursed haahaaa

Overfuelling maybe, when was the last time you changed the air filter? as a filthy one will starve the engine and turbo but it will fuel the same and smoke! although it does sound like it kicked into limp mode briefly, maybe turbo air solenoid is leaking?

I had recently checked the air filter removed cleaned and have done 3000 miles since, I have had no loss of power or smoking before, my be regeneration on the exhaust system burning out the crap/.
Thanks for the heads up.

You may be need of an Italian Tune-up: fifteen minutes+ along the motorway, in 4th rather than 5th, keeping engine revs at 3500ish, briefly 4000. Exhaust needs a good slooooosh out, to shift accumulated soot.
Lots of around-town tootling about isn't good for diesels, which benefit from being driven hard, at least once a month.
Try this, and then see how things stand.

White smoke could be unburnt fuel, or a head-gasket going. If no coolant loss, then unlikely the latter. As suggested, do change the air filter, if not already done.

Maybe. Try the motorway blast first, though.

And check your oil level, make sure it is not increasing due to over-fuelling.

Ahhh :(......I would say injector leaking BUT....This is where it gets to advanced for me, but you will be thinning your oil so I personally would not drive it now.

By how much is the level up? Does the engine oil smell of diesel?
Is the oil noticeably thinned? - if not, it's probably ok to drive gently (diesel is a reasonable lubricant, after all).

If in doubt about the injectors, whip them out and have them serviced/checked/calibrated by your local diesel specialist (and not a general workshop/garage). Last time I did this it cost just €70 for the set of four Bosch.

My oil level is up by a quarter but when I think back this has been rising over a few weeks . The thing is Im doing the work on the car, the French are ok at it just far to expensive. Could the injector be sticking and how do i know which one ? as no signs of it leaking on the top of the head.

If you think the French are expensive, you should try the Japanese. Don't go wrong often, but when they do.....!
Mitsubishi lead the pack in this respect, I'm told. Friend in the trade recently laid in a rear diff for a Mitsi 4x4 (the worn crownwheel was not available as a separate part): Diff, complete, €6000.

My understanding is that it's not safe or really practicable to d.i.y. test individual injectors. Best to take the set to a diesel specialist. Get a quote first, for what is a standard job. Some injectors should be serviced every 60k mi, in theory.

If anyone knows how you might tackle the job yourself, I'm sure they will shout.
