Hello to all
ok - we did everything wrong.
We changed the heater-matrix and the original radio at the same time.
After putting everything back our dashboard lights did not work. The prospect of taking the dash out again was a looming nightmare.
The "bridge" was in place, next to the headlights height-control and fuse 19 was blown.
We left it alone for a few weeks and when doing a job on the heater controls discovered that the culprit was the orange wire that goes to the light on the cigarette-lighter.
Disconnected the wire and now the dashboard is perfectly lit.
We hope this is of use to someone.

Re: Peugeot 306 dashboard lights - fixed
Great.
The normal cause of this type of 'problem' is usually the dimmer rheostat being open circuit or unplugged. As the tracks inside it wear its posible to get certain positions where there's no continuity = no dash / panel lights.
405 (and where fitted 205's) were a bit of a culprit for this as the dimmer wheel was located on the underside of the steering column cowling, an unknowing owner could accidentally catch it with the legs etc when entering / leaving the vehicle (more likely on a 405 actually)
Had a couple of customers in the past who had done this, said they had no dash lights but they had somehow knocked it fully 'dim'
