Xantia S2 Power Steering Pipe & Others

Post by XantiaExclusiveHDI »

Hi all

Well my MOT is a few months away - and I am mindful of the advisories:

Brake pipe slightly corroded - front to rear at rear metal brake pipe 3.6.B.2c
Brake hose slightly deteriorated nearside front (brake flexi hose) 3.6.B.4d
Brake hose slightly deteriorated offside front (brake flexi hose) 3.6.B.4d
Power steering pipe starting to corrode

The flexi's look absolutely fine to me?! The ABS sensor strain reliefs were a little weathered - did they get them mixed up!?! Anyhow I'll replace the flexi's and the ABS sensors.

Now the other pipes are an unknown quantity for me. I'm sure I have read somewhere the power steering pipe is a bugger to replace or NLA? Did I also read that someone was able to replace these using a kit made up of three pieces? I note the advisory doesn't suggest where the problematic corrosion is exactly - where do these normally cause issues on S2 cars?

Thanks all!

The power steering pipe usually rusts as it runs under the nearside wheel arch where it clips into the inner wing/body work. It is often surface rust and a decent clean and coating rust preventative paint and then smear lightly with grease.

Another member does complete replacement pipes for £40 I think. His details are on the forum. Fitting is a pain but not impossible.

The rear brake pipe I assume is the supply pipe is again fiddly but can be done. The pipe rusts either at the bottom of the front bulkhead or where the pipe starts to rise over the rear sub frame. The other problem can be removing it from the K joint.

Have a look at my Xantia plumbing thread all the diagrams are there.

http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... =3&t=48254

I have replaced most of the pipes so can some advise.

I used Madybums replacement kit and found it relatively easy..
http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... =7&t=49073
I added bits of hosepipe to protect the pipe at exposed parts otherwise there was plenty of spare pipe which I just coiled and tie wrapped. I think its important from the outset not to try to get the pipes out in one piece.. realise that to do that will be impossible and as long as you keep the run of the pipe roughly the same it makes life a lot easier. I got my suspension pipe from big Mick at eurocarparts and lined it with a protective covering of shrink wrap tubing. Hope this helps.

Well I emailed Mardybum though his site last week (RetroRamp) and he initially replied to say he could add a kit to 4 he's making up for other customers. I followed up my initial enquiry with a couple of emails - alas I have heard nothing back since then.. I hope he's just on holiday!

Hi Chris - thanks for the reply.

Well still no answer and I've sent a few emails now including to the PayPal address. I'm wondering if he is still in business?! Did you have any contact numbers for Steve @ Retro Ramp? I'm getting a little concerned given my MOT is just a couple of weeks away! Cheers

Well I have sent one more email to see if I can elicit a reply. I do suspect he may no longer be trading - which would be brilliantly bad timing for me at least. I asked if he could let me know one way or the other so I can update the folks here too.

Is anyone aware of the BOM for this kit? I have a friendly local hydraulics business that could possibly take up where Steve left off to assist Xantia owners in a similar plight.

Good news!

I just received a reply from Steve - he's been working away for the last month. Placed my order and fingers crossed I will get it in time :)
