Xu10j4r in a 205?

Post by ricardude »

I've got a nice 205gt with a 1.4 engine. Light car but 85hp is not really enough..
Also have a 306xsi with a 2.0 16v, which is noticeably quicker. That one is off the road these days, gathering leaves in my yard. I couldn't sell it for much so have been thinking about the possibility of transplanting its engine into the 205.
I've been told it will fit, and 135hp would be a considerable boost (although heavier of course). The thing is, I don't want to mess about with electrics and ecu etc. so can the xu10j4r be run successfully on carbs? If so which variety?
Any advice appreciated thanks folks.

Sounds like an awful lot of work when you could buy a sorted 205 1.9 GTi.

Which is what I would do, God knows what the Insurance would be like on a 205 GT with the engine from a 306 GTi
Xantia 2.0SX estate (now sold)
Xantia 1.9 TD SX hatch 102K (all old MOT'S) and working A/C.(Sold to forum member, time to save for a C5)
2007 Berlingo Multispace 1.4i Forte, bought in November with genuine 27k miles, now on 39799 miles.

Its been done loads of times but normally the end result is a 16V 205GTi. Not sure that the 205 1.4 running gear would cope with a 135hp engine?
As with any car conversion project anything is possible, providing you have the skills, time, facilities and knowhow. Its a massive undertaking and is best left to a motor sport workshop.Do you really want to go to all this effort fitting an old engine and box that has been "gathering leaves in your yard".

Well actually the engine is in really good shape, never leaks oil or smokes, and still has plenty of power. But yes, the 205 would probably need other changes to handle the extra weight and torque of the iron block, which may not be worth it for an extra 50hp.
As I've already got the 306 I thought I could perhaps make use of it somehow. It might end up as a cheap track car..

Yes,spend your time and money on the 306.
The 306 16v range were some of the best cars Peugeot ever made, the XU10j4 engine is brilliant.
