New Cam Belt Slid Off Pulleys

Unread post by Pug_XUD_KeenAmateur »

worth a mention this, having finally gotten around to doing my cam belt.

So I've fitted the new belt, removed the locking pins from the pulleys & flywheels
Turned it by hand
Re-fitted the top engine mount and starter to run it and ensure its ok
Turned it on the starter, with the stop switch disconnected
All good so far....

I starts it up, runs it at tickover for a few seconds and within seconds THE BELT'S MAKING ITS WAY SIDEWARDS OFF THE PULLEYS.
THANK GOODNESS I CHECKED AND DIDN'T PUT THE COVERS BACK ON; and that I didnt' rev it!!
I switched off with half a width's belt still in place.

Having a cuppa, before I put the pins back, slacken the tensioner and refit the belt.

later realised, with additional confirmation from Spyder (thankyou) that the issue here was the fact that at this point I'd not refitted the bottom (crankshaft) pulley.
So actually, had I satisfied myself with just turning it by hand, then continued with re-assembly I'd've not had a problem

So was I. Your a lucky lad Pug XUD as you now know the only thing holding the belt sprocket on the crank is a fully tightened pulley. It should have slid right off and that would have been the end of your cylinder head.
Have you had a very close look at the belt for any damage caused by it hanging half off?

cor, yeah; had a good look and thankfully its fine. The dangers of not having anyone to actually guide you through a job.
Nice to be called a lad, makes me feel almost young again, Birthday soon and I'm old enough to find the idea far from exciting :-D
