Air con failure

Post by Bandit12 »

Hi guys,

My air con on my 2002 HDI exclusive has stopped working. both the auto and the aircon buttons light up when pressed but no noise from compressor. Just put her on the lexia and a fault was listed under the BSI heading. further investigation revealed the message "air compressor failure" I tried to delete the code but it would not let me. I did the diagnostic test for both the air con compressor and the fan blower. Neither of which activated (well I couldnt hear anything even with windows down.) I've had a look under bonnet for the obvious such as loose wires or broken belts but all looks and sounds sweet (for a diesel)
Is there a specific fuse or relay worth checking as the manual is typically vague?
Is a new compressor easy enough to fit or is this dealer only because of the coolant involved? Is it worth risking a 2nd hand one?
Had the system re gassed by citroen 3 years ago when I bought the car.

Any advice is gratefully appreciated

I quick google, easy enough to replace but I would let a garage do it as they can remove the gas (if any) and recharge when the job is done. Mine packed up recently and it turned out to be the evaporator temperature sensor, the compressor did kick in but for only a few seconds.

Good luck, keep us informed.

Before doing anything expensive, make sure that there is still gas in the system. I suspect that low gas pressure might bring up the compressor failure error due to the pressure switch disconnecting the compressor from the BSI.

Thanks for the help guys, just looked at the prices and its £344 for a new one. I didnt realise that if the pressure drops the compressor wont turn so I think its worth a punt on £45 for my local citroen dealer to check and re gas first. Mind you I shudder to think how much a genuine compressor would cost! probably the value of the car!
I'll book it in and keep you guys posted.

Plenty of second-hand compressors around under £50, but as has been said, it could be anything. Most likely low gas pressure, though. The hard part is finding the leak, if it's not just diffused away over time.

If you suspect a leak, get it re-gassed with some leak-tracer added. Shows up fluorescent where the leak is. Any decent AC depot will be able to do this. Ask first.

I've just posted my C5 X7 Air Con Issue under the French Air Con Topic here:
http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... 12&t=55889

I have 2 BSI Fault Codes
F5FF - Unexpected Re-initialisation fault coming from the BSI
C994 - Engine Fusebox: Fault in the Aircon Compressor Clutch Control Circuit.

Booked in Tuesday - I'll post back updates in case it helps others.

on the x7 there are 2 connections on the pump, the one pulley end disconnect it and when a/c is on see if there is 12v and earth at the wiring loom end of that plug, that will tell you that the a/c is calling and there is gas there as no gas no 12v at pump, the other end of plug see if you have an ohm reading of around 2-5 ohms on a multi meter, if you have dead short 0 ohms it'll have blown a fuse and no continuity at all the coil has had it and needs replacing, mine was coil went open circuit, could have got a repair kit for the coil but a second hand pump was cheaper and less hassle

I see you are from Peterborough! - that's where I travelled to yesterday (560 mile round trip) with a relative to pick up a Xsara Picasso from a Dealer (http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... 15#p500027) , when my Air Con went! Mine's under warranty, so at present I'll leave them to sort it this time as I'm really not in the mood after loosing nearly 2 stone in the heat yesterday! :-D But thanks for the input, I'll post back the issue with mine just in case it helps others with the specific symptoms.

No real heat here just muggy as hell and watching the lighting maps online soon have loads of thunder and lighting.... Luckally got my pump changed and re gassed and all belly pan and wheel arch liner back in before it starts

Nice one - Luckily I have ClimAir Wind Deflectors fitted to the windows, so we were able to drive the journey with windows half way open to get a bit of cool air in the car on the dual carriageways - otherwise would of been cooking by the time we got there! Mine's booked in Tuesday morning - I just want the thing fixed permanently now - this will be 6th trip for the air con alone!
