C5 V6

Post by PC2CV »

Hi, i recently bought myself my first big Citroen a MK1 C5 V6, and was sent this way for advice regarding them; here she is:

The only failure point at the MOT was an ABS light, It has a problem with the ABS block, according to the lexia tool. Took it out to realise that there is not much in there that can be worked on:

I need some advice about getting a replacement pump, will any MK1 C5 ABS pump do, say out of a HDi? Or must it have come from a V6?

Some cleaning of the interior:

Hi, and welcome to the forum. :welc:

I have just done a little checking, and the first question that needs to be asked is; does your C5 have the Electronic Stability Program? There are ABS Block options that differ depending on whether the C5 has ESP. If you do not know, post up the last eight digits of the VIN, and somebody with the relevant access can then find out what the C5 had fitted when it came out of the factory.

You might also find something like these DVDs useful. They cover a lot of details;

Looking at the pic it looks to have the button to the front left of the gear stick so it has esp.

What was the fault code precisely ? What you have taken apart is the hydraulic block for the ABS, but unless the fault code explicitly suggests the hydraulic block is faulty I would have my doubts that it would be the problem.

The vast majority of ABS faults are electrical in nature, typically either wheel sensors or wiring. ECU failures are rare and I've actually never heard of anyone having to repair the hydraulic block itself...

If you have a Lexia finding the problem is going to be much easier. Aside from fault codes, you are able to test the wheel sensor speeds (jack the car up and spin the wheels and watch the reading on the Lexia) and also test the actuation of the hydraulic block - you do this by holding down the brake pedal firmly with something like a length of wood wedged against the seat then tell the Lexia to test a particular wheel - you then try spinning the wheel by hand with it raised off the ground and you'll find that during the test the wheel locks and unlocks repeatedly under computer control even though the brake pedal is held down.

This is an indication that the hydraulic actuator for that wheel is working as it should. The electrovalve controlled valves in the block turn off the brake on that wheel when energised, as their default mechanical position is of course for the brake to be enabled for safety reasons and the ECU will only disable the brake on an individual wheel under very specific and carefully controlled circumstances.

Im a bit confused if it has ESP its an Exclusive SE has everything else, dont seem to see any ESP off button, ive got a sport mode and winter mode button by the gear lever.

Servicebox says this, still not certain if it has it or not? "DYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM WITHOUT ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM" is a bit confusing

This is what Lexia says:

I was told that if one of these sits up for a length of time the valves can stick.

Interesting.. I assume your in the uk.. However i could be wrong but possibly when new there was a choice to not choose esp when ordering..

The car could be an exclusive but not an exclusive se which in mk.1 c5 were two seperate trim levels.. However next to your vin number on lexia screen where your car is described if it was an exclusive it would say there which it doesnt. Trim level upper low plus.. Indicates its not top spec. Interesting spec level..

Should i be trying to match up the numbers with the replacement pump?

The numbers on this old one are:
964 184 7080 on the black plastic housing

96 418 470 80 on the cylindrical pump housing
10.0206-0004.4 on the pump housing

Just looking through ebay there doesn't seem to be any specifically removed from a MK1 V6. Does anyone on here break citroens, or alternatively is it possible to swap over the black ecu section with the hydraulic section of another car? What are the differences between the pumps?

There appears to be about 5 different ones - even if it's not got ESP it might have traction control, so you need to get the right one - actually looking at yours, it does have TC - so you will need to find one off a car that has TC but not ESP!

If you REALLY havent got esp you will need another without which are more common then ones with.. Any off an LX or SX or VTR model mk.1 should do... Ive got an lx here but the nose is stuffed into some bushs and last time i looked there was a nest of chicks in the battery tray area...

Dont they all have traction control anyway richard as standard with esp? Or was that choice aswell..

I remember a similar issue on a mates corsa. Different ECU on the abs pump and a different plug meant it wouldnt fit. The hydraulics were ok so we swapped over the ecu housing onto the good hydraulic block
Put it back into the car and it went ok. I just wonder is the problem here a stuck valve inside the block, or an electrical fault with the magnetic coils that presumably open and close the valves. (Suppose BBA reman fix these at a nice steep price)

This came from a HDi 110 that a local breakers had in stock, they were good enough to let me check the vin on their computer:
Image
It has the same dynamic stability control without electronic stabiltiy program, but no antislipping

Suppose this one doesnt break the bank at £50:

Ecu things simmilar with the suspension motor on the c5.. One died on a vtr c5 04 plate.. We bought another from a c5 x7 .. The ecu is on top of the pump.. Put it all in but the plug on the car fitted the x7 ecu but played havoc.. So swapped the pump ecu back to the cars original which is the same style as your abs one and suspension was restored...

Sorry slightly off course

The pump in that listing arrived same part numbers, went in without any issues and solved the light, just need to bleed the brakes now.
