Black smoke and no power

Post by garriebennett »

:( :( :? :? I have a Citroen C5 hdi (2004). I have nothing but praise for the car as done 140,000km. Recently a fault came up with the service light and engine fault came up. I was 2000km from home so service centre said it was a egr error and best to return home before repairing. At home I pulled of the egr and it was quite clean. The egr was not seized and emitted dense clouds of acrid black smoke, could find no obvious problem. Then realised the vacuum line was torn. ..... to do this job I disconnected the battery.

After reassembly og the egr and reconnecting the battery, it started ok. When I went to drive it discharged dense clouds of acrid black smoke.

Then I realised the problem only occurs when I depress the accelerator over 1/4 its travel.

Then the ABS like started to come on periodically. If I softly accelerate it will easily get to speed limit. 100km

A workshop recorded the following faults. P2299 ACCELERATOR JAMMED / P0401 EGR circuit / P0400 EGR Solenoid Valve / P0100 Flow Sensor Signal
P03800 Preheating Relay Circuit / C1390 Regulation Of Engine TorQue

Any idea of what is going on. No one around here can help.

Welcome!

You really need to get it on Lexia, but that might be difficult where you are....!

So, I would start from the top. Disconnect the vac hose to the EGR this should cause it close. Does this improve matters?
Any chance your mech can get live data from the ECU - I would be checking the air flow. Failure of the MAF sensor is not uncommon, but usually causes a lack of power.

Could be a failure in the air intake system, try disconnecting the air intake from the manifold and see if it runs without smoking, if it does you either have an obstruction somewhere or the turbo has failed but that's very unlikely if its a 2.0. 8 valve engine.

Id be inclined to be a split hose AFTER the air flow meter... POSSIBLY between turbo and inlet manifold pipe..

The black smoke indicates that the air flow meter has measured X amount of air flow the turbo has spun up the ecu has calculated the fuel needed.. but the air recived in the engine is less then what was measured and so too much fuel for the air recived. So possible leaks.. Turbo outlet pipe at the back under the engine has split or come off.. Intercooler possibly got a hole in it or the intercooler pipe from the manifold has a split in it loosing air flow...

Any whistling noises from escaping turbo pressure?

I have had the car into the workshop again and now have no problem with the black smoke.
Now just get the engine light, service light and the abs light. Most frustrating is that it is now rev limited to under 3000rpm.
As long as I keep rpm below 2500 it runs sweetly at our max speed of 110 kpm.

I cannot detect any vacuum on line to egg.

If it drives OK with the light on I wouldn't worry about it. Revs being limited to 3k wouldn't worry me in the least, I rarely go over 2000, most economical speed and where most of the torque is.

Limited to 3k useually indicates the engine has detected over boost from the turbo do shuts power down to protect the engine.. The turbo wastegate is controled by a vaccum electrovalve that directs vaccum to and away from the wastegate depending on turbo boost needed.. If the vaccum to the wastegate doesn't get switched off the wastegate stays closed.. Turbo boost pressure climbs with engine revs untill too much is detected..

Not Worrying about limited revs is not a good idea it can be dangerous in the wrong situation and doesnt help with hil climbs either.. I would be sorting it out if it was me.

The best thing to do is get the codes read with a code reader..

Is this 2.0HDi or the 2.2HDi? The turbo boost is controlled differently depending on which it is.
