C5 - what to expect next?

Post by hayabusa1300r »

Hi Everyone,

Having only had my 02 c5 2.2 Exclusive estate, 112k, for a couple of months I'm seeking some advice / input on "what happens next" in terms of maintenance. It has had in the last 12 months / 10,000 miles:
clutch
cambelt
water pump
starter
battery
oil changes

In the last 2 months I've:
removed and cleaned the DPF
repaired the DPF pressure differential pipework, which had popped due to excessive back pressure caused by the DPF being blocked
oil x 2 and air filters replaced
oil swopped twice
new internal door handle, drivers, after it snapped on me
stripped and rebuilt front callipers
removed corrosion on rear callipers
swopped ABS block to cure no speedo / mileometer (didn't work)
replaced crank pulley and aux belt

I see looming in descending priority, based on what I've read here / and manufacturers recommendations:

with the exception of this : fix the speedo and mileometer - £?
replace LDS - £40
replace spheres - £240
fill Eolys - £150 without reset
trailing arm bearings - not yet noisy - £140
change fuel filter - £10

These are parts only prices with me doing the fitting

My brother has had the car for the last 5 years / 55k, he has had basic servicing done by a non specialist and the clutch / cambelt / water pump / battery replaced, so I "know" they've been done. He also drives like an old woman so I know its not been ragged (but probably not the best for clearing the DPF etc ). The car now runs well, everything works except the speedo thing, and its quite tidy, but it feels a bit baggy / wallowy, doesn't track too well - and I'm thinking that's the spheres / fluid - which have definitely not been changed in 55k miles. I'm pushing the car into regular service, approximately 400 miles a week, so it needs to be right, but I appreciate that i'm spending more than its worth, what do you "guys" think?

cheers John

Well from the sounds of it you are being quite proactive and positive about the maintenance for a start! :-D Incidcentally, regarding the speedo - if the mileage is still clocking up and the rev counter is working, it is likely to be the steper motor for the speedometer. They look like these:

In that case, it's likely to be the speed sensor - here's a video showing same type of issue on a 206 - location should be similar, so might be helpful:

I'm sure I read a post from Wheeler recently saying that C5s don't have a specific speed sensor and get their speed information from the ABS system.

That's right Paul - but I think there is also one with the auto boxes too as per Jim's post:

Assuming you don't have any permanent faults on your car - but especially with regard to the ABS / ESP systems...

A few checks you can do- disconnect the battery then:
Check all the fuses in the A) Engine fusebox, B) Passenger compartment fuses. Also check the connector plugs on the BSI - sometimes the pins on the block can become loose. Al little contact spray may also help to clean them.

If these are OK, there is a test for where the total mileage display isn't working, and / or the speedo is intermittent / faulty using the Lexia. It's a test as to whether the BSI or the ABS is faulty. Both involve using the Lexia to carry out a live data parameter measurement, which is compared to the actual vehicle speed.

The trouble is, if you don't have the speedo working either, you can't tell what speed you are going- unless you have it on a 'rolling road'!

Basically you take a live parameter measurement from the ABS of the vehicle speed and see if that is coherent with the actual vehicle speed; if it is you go on to do the same vehicle speed test within the BSI measurement parameters. If it is not, the ABS system is likely faulty.

If the ABS is reporting the same speed as the car is travelling and the BSI is not reporting the same speed, then it is likely that there is an internal fault with the BSI - one of the pins is loose, a fuse or a bad connection. As all these areas seem to be suffering in your case - i.e. the speedo, the odometer (and I suspect the average speed figures too) it has to be a problem with the data not being communicated to the dash instruments via the BSI.

I would start with the easiest checks - fuses and pins - but make sure tha battery is disconnected first, and afterwards do the BSI reset procedure too.

A satnav will give a reasonably accurate indication of the speed to compare with the Lexia results.

I've had an indie, well 2look at - neither could communicate with the abs, so on spec I swopped the block and module, still nothing, no speedo, no odo, no trip, no cruise, no abs / esp. I did have it booked in for an auto electrician but I had to cancel due to work, so on the next fine day the fuse board and ecu is coming out, so I can remove the abs connector, reinstate the others temporarily so I can power same up and see if i'm getting a feed to the abs and go through there. All fuses are ok, can now do bsi reset in my sleep

cheers John

Yep - all these point to the ABS / ESP as they all rely on the vehicle speed to function. If you post your VIN I'll check the ABS module part to make sure it's the right one - and also helps in case you need any other info.
