C4 Picasso Rear Caliper Siezing

Post by citroenxm »

Im running around in a C4 Picasso HDi... The rear nearside caliper is holding on.. However, the parking brake side of the caliper works fine and pulls on and releases fine... however the brake still holds on. I know this from the heat generated when I pull up, where theres none on the drivers side.

Could it simply be an issue with the Hydraulic side behind the piston?? Or - even though the park brake works will it still need a full strip down and clean up?

The car wont be out of action, Ive got another one to work on..

Any advice greatly recived. Thanks

Had this on ours - the pads were just a bit stuck. When you take it off though, check that the slides are free to move in the caliper bracket - I think this is a problem on these (as it was on my 307 recently)

Hi richard.. Ahhh ok. Theres a thought. prehaps shave half a mm off the top of the pad metal backing so they move a bit easyer... Thinking about it.. When i swapped caliper i only swapped the caliper and not the yolk with pads.. That will explain it a bit more..

Fantastic. thanks again richard..

Actually scrub that.. brakes were not binding until handbrake was activated.. i.e. remove caliper. Wind piston in.. get home without turning engine off .. so for some reason the handbrake was causing the binding .. even though the cable was releasing fine..

Now you've said it, I remember that's exactly what I did - filed the ends off the pads so that they were looser in the bracket.

I have just had this problem with a 406 n/s front caliper Paul - all the way to the north of Scotland and back, it would bind for 5 or 6 miles then gradually come off, I tried squirting some brake fluid in under the rubber boot but it didn't help, the piston looked fine, no sign of corrosion or rust. I took it off when we got home and could find no reason for it at all, I can only suspect that the piston jammed somehow, I tried hitting it with a large hammer and drift but it wouldn't budge so I fitted the one off my old car and its fine now.

Right, an update on this...

I finally found 30 mins to look at the Caliper carrier.. I removed the caliper, the pads were rather tight indeed in the carrier.

So I removed them, took the anti rattle plates off and they were choked up, also there was a build up between the caliper and plate, cleaned it all up and refitted them and out of advice I also took about half a mm off top and bottom of the pad backing... and fitted them..

The result? A stunning sucess! I left my mums with 119miles remaining, 20 miles at 69mpg and the remaining fuel went UP to 138 miles. The average has now risen from 51 to 57mpg !! I had also fitted a new air filter. Just need to change the oil..

Very pleased with that result.

Thanks Richard...
