cracked tailgate xantia

Post by chinkostu »

So like an idiot i've just managed to reverse into a post in the xantia. It was a weird one as its on the pavement and in an n shape so has hit the tailgate above the number plate. Thought I had just scuffed it until i looked under the plate and its cracked. Is it worth getting some filler and fixing or is it a new boot job?

A quick check under the panel and its cracked through :( i did push the plate in and it seems to have sat flush again rather than one side raised, just a gap now!

I'd drill some small holes at the end of the cracks with a 2.0 mm drill bit carefully
to stop them travelling any further for a start.
then run thin superglue into the cracks from the uppermost holes you have drilled.
allowing gravity to take the glue down the cracks,
wipe any excess clear of the surface with a damp cloth
this will at least waterproof the car and stop water penetrating the cracks.

Then pull that number plate off and apply some filler sand back and paint.
if you have access to the back of the panel you could apply some fibreglass
matting to it, after giving it a good sanding with course sandpaper.

if you want lots more time to apply fibre glass and faff about
you can buy a product called finishing resin from most good model shops
but it needs good dry conditions like we have at the moment and gives about 20 to 30 mins of playing around time
it is not cheap about 30 quid for a pack the finishing resin is slightly flexible when set.
you will still need some fibreglass matting available at most good auto factor shops
I believe wilkos sell it. if you have one nearby.

wear gloves when fibre glassing and do it in plenty of ventilation you can get pretty high on the stuff
and it aint good for the lungs. you will also need some old paint brushes and you will need at least one for every batch of
fibreglass/finishing resin you make up they set rock hard and become useless afterwards.
I buy the cheap 25p 2 inch brushes at wilkos car mart.

I was thinking of trying filler from inside the bootlid, pushing it through the crack then skimming it off on the outside? Or is that unlikely to work
