Peugeot 306 getting hot quick

Post by jessy-james »

Hi, All
I`ve got a 93 L plated 1.9 pug 306xtdt.
My problem is it gets hot quite quick,
well quicker than i would like.
I had to change the head on it which didn`t show any
major signs of of overheating, it just made a fizzing
sound followed by a rapid loss of water.
Anyhow on pulling it appart the head was cracked :( .
So after finding a replacement head and re-fitting
along with new water pump, thermostat switch and
thermostat, my problems didn`t end there.
The temp is stable to the point of going up a hill
or accelerating hard, the gauge will move upto 90c
very quickly. I have an overide switch near the stearing
wheel just incase the temp gets out of hand,
i can switch the the fan in manually as i can`t afford
another head or gasket ect at this time,
plus the weather is crap [:)]
I`ve also taken the heater matrix out by bridging the
the two hoses with a peace of pipe from the old head,
just to make sure there is no air in the system due to
leaks. Ive ran it now for about 1 month with no water
leaks, i also flushed it out and checked all the pipes
for blockages but didn`t find any.
One thing i have noticed is that there is a pipe at
the bottom of the rad which is capped off with a peace
of pipe and a bolt, im sort of in 2 minds wheather the
rad has been changed, and it was maybe from a model with
air con, "but im just guessing". There are 2 pipes on the rad
the same bore size, 1 supply`s the top of the head splitting into
two pipes supplying left and right sides of the head,
but the other one is capped. "hmm strange".
A friend at work said we had a machine with a pug TD engine in it
and it used to get hot quick if the filter got blocked up,
Im not sure when the oil,air filter was last changed by the way.
Hope someone may be able to shed some light on this for me.

I don't know about the air-con option on the radiator, but reaching 90C under load is nothing to worry about with a pressurised cooling system, and by-passing the heater matrix will only make it warm up more quickly.

as long as the temp doesnt go up into the red dont worry. The temp gauge on my zx 1.4i seems to increase when the engine is under load, going up hills, fast run on dual carriage way, m way etc i.e. from 90 to 100c on the gauge but hasnt gone anywhere near the red yet so im not to bothered. So I wouldnt worry about unless your getting any other headgasket related problems.

Hi Sl4yer,CITMAN
Thanx for you input guy`s
It takes about 7/10 minutes or so to get to
85c in this weather at -1, seems a bit fast
thats with or without the matrix in Sl4yer.
The reason i took it out was there seemed
to be air in the system all the time,
plus it was blocked up/leaking, so no point
in having to bleed re-fill the bugger every week.
And the other point i was pondering is, what temp
does the fan normally cut in, it ses low speed 92.5c
and fast 97.5c on the rad thermostat, i see somewhere
in the forums it`s 2xfans @6volts or 1xfan @12 volts,
there are 2 switching relays for the fans and 1 other
relay which i guess does the series/parralel bit,
I think i have let it get to around 95/100c
but no sign of a fan cutting in, which is strange
because everything tests out fine, but the fans just
don`t cut in, "hence the switch near the steering wheel".
It`s a long shot - but i guess i might have a faulty fan
switch even though it is a new switch!! but this doesn`t
explain why it gets so hot so quick under a bit of strain.
I think i tried testing all the switches,i have 3 of them.
my old 1 another from the new head plus 1 i bought new,
i tried putting them in boiling water and testing them
with a normal buzz tester, but no response from any of them
in any position, do you guy`s know if they can be tested like this??
oh well there`s a bit more info for you i`ll post more if i
think of anything else. And thanks again for your help so far.
