Hi all i just changed my fuel filter on 1.6 hdi berlingo and found there is no water in oil detector screwed in at the bottom of filter next to the blank sensor socket. so i have fitted the new filter without it and all is fine but is this a problem? should i get one and fit it asap?
Thanks
Kev

I've never once had the water in fuel warning illuminate so I'd not install one myself.

Ok thanks so nothing to worry about then.
Just a quick question do you ever drain the filter and re pump it? is this a thing to do to maintain things?
Thanks
Kev

I would expect they deleted them due to problems possibly.
If you look at an XUD with the "top hat" type filter (93 / 94 onwards) you'll see the earlier ones have the sensor screwed into the housing and the later ones do not have one at all.
Regarding draining, ideally yes but it can be a pain to get to I know. My 'general' preference with filters on diesel engines generally is to replace the air and fuel filters every third oil change. Bear in mind I do do oil changes around every 6K though...
I know the filter 'assembly' is not too cheap on these if its the sealed unit.

You're replacing it at 20K ?Parquet Kev wrote:Thanks for the reply spider. so how often would you drain a fuel filter if its being replaced every 20k?
I'd want to drain it at least once a year or (as with older models) perhaps every oil change...

Yes id say about 20k should be enough i ve not long had the van about 3 months ish so ive changed air, fuel and oil filters and oil (oil and filter twice now actually to give it a clean through)
I will be doing oil and filter every 5-6k from now to keep things clean as i also had the filter in the banjo bolt removed.
Cheers

They dont have one the plug just plugs into a blank. Some 1.6hdi's do such as in the Despatch then you just screw the old sensor in and it breaks out the plastic blank!
