C5 ABS unit changed

Unread post by hayabusa1300r »

Evening All

I have a 2002 2.2 hdi which had a non functioning speedometer, odometer, abs and esp. Lexia could not communicate with the ABS module and I was advised to swop it, which I've done with another with the same numbers. I've just taken it for a spin and no change. Can anyone confirm whether the exchange unit has to be coded to my car before it will work at all? Or do I need to drive a certain distance before its recognised - any input greatly appreciated

Apologies if this has been asked before, but to be honest when I search for topics its not really succesfull - i use the google search on this page, is that the best way?

cheers

John

The ABS ECU doesn't need to be coded, but when it has been replaced, they say the codes should be re-read using the diagnostic.

Hard to say - but I would certainly re-run the Global Test, then clear the faults for sure after replacing the component.

there are a few basic things to program in the ABS ecu, tyre size & I think auto or manual & H3 or H3+ suspension. wouldn't think if any of these were wrong it would cause your problem.
Before condemning an ECU you really need to at least confirm if you are getting the relevant power supplies & earths to the ECU, do you know if this was done ?

Hi Wheeler, 2 x local well established specialists have confirmed that they could not communicate, access, the ABS module. The first was quite frankly unhelpful, whilst the second suggested / pinpointed a seperate issue I had with LHM (subsequently I fixed). He also suggested that the ABS module was faulty as he too could not get communication with it. He used a Lexia to interrogate. I've subsequently swopped the abs unit for a "guaranteed" one from a breakers but not reset anything, just fitted, connected and bled. I've only driven a couple of miles and still it has no speedo or odometer. I was going to the 2nd specialist today, drop in, to gauge his thoughts and get the codes read / reset, but....when I bled the brakes I noticed one disc wasn't being swept, so I've removed the calipers and cleaned up teh mating surfaces - osr was stubborn but done in an hour, nsr was evil, but all done and back on. I've even looked on French Web Forums across the water, and they seem to be suggesting a speedo sensor on the gerabox - i thought speed and distance was calculated from the rear abs sensors?.

Ive never seen a C5 with a road speed sensor in the gearbox, they normally have a blanking cap in where it would fit. Road speed info comes from the ABS system.
You said that 2 places looked at it & couldn't communicate with the ABS ecu but did they check the live supplies & earths to it ? If lives or eaths are missing it can also cause lack of communication with the abs unit if it is not powered up.

Hi

I don't know whether they checked the live supplies or earth's, I pulled every fuse prior, in glovebox, under bonnet including maxi's - i wouldn't know how to check further other than a multimeter on the abs connector lead? But as you have to remove bsi and fusebox under bonnet i dont know how / have the expertise to do this, can you clarify?
