Any caveats?

Post by lexi »

I have a squeaky air con compressor. As air con in Scotland is about as useful as the SNP, I plan to remove the compressor.
I have ordered a belt as recommended by member. A new Dayco crank damper pulley too, as old one doesn't look great on running.

Anyone see any problems with this as a permanent running set up? I suppose logic will determine belt routing?

I had the Ac compressor removed on a 1.9td xantia many moons ago and a shorter belt fitted with no issues at at all . It was removed at around 140k and I sold the car with 240k on , it went on to do another 40k+.

Thanks Mark. I think should be ok but just throwing it out there. The bits are on their way.

Really ?

I couldn't live without the demisting power of warm, air conditioner dried air in the damp 6-10 degree pouring with rain weather conditions typical to a good part of the year in Scotland.... :-D

Only when it gets below about 3-4 degrees ambient does the air conditioner become useless for demisting. Between about 6-10 degrees it works like magic and will demist all the windows in the car not just the windscreen.

Of course Simon. That's why you work in an office and I spent my working life on roofs in all weathers. :-D

The air conditioning is not for driver comfort, its so the driver can see out the windows. :-D

I was in America, driving along with the air-con on, the girl on the radio said "The temperature in Raleigh has just topped 42 degrees C.", there about fifty yards in front was a sign saying "Welcome to Raleigh."

Air con is definitely for driver comfort. :-D

Changed out the damper pulley. My task of taking the aircon out of belt loop failed anyway. The belt I got is too short. I got an 1144 as Chris on here had used that on his Xanty. I measure what I need as about 1190, so no worries as I use belts for home made drives on things.
Thing I noticed. The aircon compressor ribbed pulley, freewheels smoothly. The outer face plate spins up now and again and then stops, then starts. There is a tiny bit of pulley play on both alternator pulley and compressor.

I have no clue (or interest  ) if the aircon actually works. Neither can I say where this dry metal squeak/rattle is coming from. It emanates from around all the pulleys in a shift pattern, obviously travelling or ringing. It can stay now till it develops. I lost a set screw in a cavity around that area when doing cam belt, so I am even wondering about that. It would be too simple though.

I haven't figured out the squeal on my Xanita yet Lexi. I was coming to the conclusion that it must be lubrication related in that if theres no gas/liquid in the system, maybe thats causing the leak. I replaced the bearing in a vain atempt to sort it and tried another compressor but no improvement.. so running on a shortned belt in silence. I had to use a different routeing of the short belt to get the 1144 belt to work and it was tight. Good luck.

When DickieG re-gassed my aircon system in Gracie, one thing that his system added was a few mil of lubricant. I cannot recall how much, but the internals of the aircon do need it (he also added the U/V dye, to help track down ay leaks if they occurred).

Going by what I have read, the aircon clutch seems to be doing as it should. It seems as though this metallic click could be coming from any of the drive pulleys on the many systems. At times it appears to come from behind crank damper pulley, then alternator. Not constant, like engine speed but tinkling /cracking sound every second or two. Still cannot find the missing bolt, despite making a stiff wire probe with a strong magnet on it.
I asked at the time, could that bolt get into cam belt workings from engine side. Paul from Anglesey didn't think it could. That bolt may be red herring anyway. Could also be alternator clutch/bearing. I HATE noises.......do you?

Did you incorporate both of the tensioners Chris? I have a spring type and the eccentric roller. Missing out the air con comp, in going from crank pulley, the left side of belt goes inside spring tensioner then around fuel pump crank. The right side of belt goes inside right hand (eccentric) tensioner and up around alternator pulley. Is that what you got?

I found a diagram online of a xantia serpentine belt without a/c and used that routeing. Been a bit busy getting the xantia through the mot etc. Might think about a/c again in August, prior to the road trip south in Sept.
