AX 1.1i brake calipers stuck

Post by jsp »

Hi, I have one AX 1.1i from a relative and his brake calipers are stuck. I have cleaned the gliders but, still stuck.

Piston stuck? The caliper design is crap tbh, 2 horrible pins to hold the pads in.

Does it not release properly?

Have you greased the sliders that hold it to the strut? Or just the pad retainers? I've found the retainers can rust a bit and pads get stuck. The only other things would be the piston not retracting due to crap in its bore or a brake hose thats collapsed so the fluid can't return.

Try opening the bleeder see if it spews fluid everywhere, that would point to a fault in the hoses or lines. Otherwise exercise the piston in and out (easiest way is to take the outer pad out and press the pedal to get full extention then pull the caliper against the inner pad to retract it)

Both flexis collapsing is unlikely - so I'd concentrate on the pistons. Like the use of the word "exercising" - 'cos you might need to do this several times. Would suggest once the piston's fully out, clean it with very fine wet & dry, preferably in paraffin, then lube with fluid.
