Whirring noise / rattly noise

Hi all,

Berlingo 2.0HDi Multispace. 04 plate. 122k.

When the aircon is off, I can hear a light metallic whirring from the engine bay. I'd say it was an alternator bearing type noise. However, when I turn the aircon on and it engages, the noise disappears..

Any ideas what it might be? It had a new aux belt last year, a new timing belt kit 3 years/40,000 miles ago. The crank pulley appears sound.
