Oookaaay. Sooo, looking a bit thin on 305 owners. Well, there is only one thing to do in these circumstances. Start a thread where I will converse with myself on crucial and relevant information on the furtherness of the 305 challenge moving forward robustly and with ring fencing in place to meet the needs and requirements of the relevant perpetrators of the insuppresable volubilities of assertion. Sorry ! Went off into total Beaurocrap towards the end there. Although I did only get one " challenge " in which is low by modern standards of Beaurocrapocity. Woops ! forgot to get " moving forward " in there. Oh well ! Back to the drawing board !

Vote for me, I speak Breaucrap !

Yep I saw the black one as well, and yep I would've snapped the guy's hand off if it's as good as it's made out to be (and I wasn't broke)

I hope the cambelt bearings were changed. I was living in Holland seven years ago and asked the local garage to fit a new cambelt. Unfortunately because I presumed he would put new bearings on, and he didn't ask if I wanted them, he therefore didn't. Ten thousand miles later knackered engine. What kind of dickhead mechanic doesn't put new bearings in ? Or at least ask if I want them ? Still, silver linings and all that. Got a lump from a one woman ( +/- points ) owner Xantia with full service history, even down to bulbs and fuses, and 65000 on it. Its in my top three engines ever owned and I've had a few. Round the 100 in 50 years of motoring, and the same 305 van for the last 17.

The same kind perhaps that couldn't handle swapping a gear selector cable on an XM 2.0 auto estate, or would bypass the safety circuits instead of cleaning contacts on the neutral lockout switch. I believe that was somewhere in the Netherlands, the previous (and again current) owner of our short-term XM project weldathon travelled/travels quite frequently there in the old barge as it's his home country. Some of the stories of that garage made me wonder why he continued to patronize the place...

I think one lady owner can be a blessing sometimes, our Escort has only one former keeper (for 25 years/100k no less!) and full history from main dealer and one other independent garage until it was laid up in 2007 with a slipping clutch. 9 years later, we took a battery to it and it fired up almost too willingly. Heck, even the Bosch battery on it came back to life on the charger... I think the right lady owner is definitely a plus points, based on this car.

You've done well to own that many motors if you keep them anything like as long as the 305, I'm almost ashamed to lay claim to somewhere around the same figure after only 18 years on the road. (although our little 206 Hdi is on the keeper list I think). I keep meaning to write a list of cars I've owned, there's some really regretful sales/scrappings along the way. Never had the pleasure of even driving a 305 though sadly, always did like the shape of them & the 504 too. I fear they're too rare now for us to find a sensible/saveable condition example in our budget.

Agreed. The one lady owner can be good or bad. I don't think the engine I got had been driven over 50mph as the smoke test came down 2 years running. As to slipping clutches, I seem to see and hear a lot of females over revving and slipping the clutch to reverse slowly into a parking space. Makes me whince! I managed to make the clutch on my van last from when I bought it to earlier this year. About 16 years not including how long it was on there before I got it. But having learned ( self taught ) the technique of only using the clutch to pull away or reverse. Can also be used in clutch cable breakage scene, only difference being to pull away on the starter.
Anyway I'm sure there are a lot of others who know how to do it. ( ooer missus?? ) If not let me know.
I drove round Glasgow for 2 days with a broken cable back in the seventies and again In Portugal 10 years ago, so it can be well handy to know.

I believe it's all in the timing of when to apply a bit of pressure to slide it home (ooer again) lol. Used to enjoy practicing the art of the clutchless shift in my biking days, when there was also innuendo to be made from using the correct wrist action to make it happen smoothly.

Not had the misfortune to experience clutch failure in the no-pedal context although owning this 275k 406 with the pull type clutch means I'm now more likely than ever before to get to practice my mechanical co-ordination skills in the near future.

Hey, I've a 1985 saloon. Red, battered, in desperate need of an elusive rear strut top mount .
