Cutting-out under hard acceleration, C5 2.0 HDI

Post by pabloalfa76 »

Hi All,

Well it didn't take long for another problem to appear!

As per title, my Citroen C5 2002 2.0 HDI, will cut out under hard acceleration.

To restart it, I have to disconnect the battery ( hold the terminals together ), then lock and unlock the doors with the key. It will then restart. Yay!

So I've done some searching and without Lexia diagnostics, it looks like it's going to be fuel related?

Before I start buying Fuel pressure regulators and the like, does anyone have any experience of this being fixed?

Cheers, Paul.

It won't do it any good if you keep doing that - without following the BSI reset procedure - otherwise it can play havoc with the electronics:
  • Put the driver's window down, lift the bonnet and ensure all equipment is switched off.
  • Ensure all doors are closed and remove key from the ignition.
  • Wait for 3 minutes, disconnect the vehicle battery and wait at least a minute.
  • Reconnect the vehicle battery, wait a further minute (do not open doors).
  • Switch on the side lights through the driver's window.
  • Switch on the ignition and check system's functionality.
  • Hold lock button on key down for 10 seconds.
  • Remove key open & close door test central locking system.
  • Start the engine and complete the system's check.
  • Failure to follow this procedure could result in incorrect operation of many BSI related items.
You should do this every time you intend to disconnect the battery. If your problem continues, then a Lexia has to be the way to go first as it makes no sense to start saying 'fuel pump', 'MAF' etc., when it could be a miriad of things.

Not really recommended to short the disconnected terminals together, much safer to use a 12v bulb in between the leads.
Do you know when the fuel filter was last changed ? If it was more than a year or 10,000 miles ago I would be changing it as a matter of course.

The problem is most likely to be the fuel rail pressure regulator. The system cuts out due to excess pressure. Did you try just waiting for a few minutes before trying to restart rather than all the complicated procedure? Does the engine stop instantly on turning off the ignition or does it give a little spurt and then stop?
This topic has been covered on a number of threads.

As has been suggested, the problem could just be down to a fuel filter that is getting blocked. If so, under hard acceleration it won't flow enough fuel, the resultant drop in pressure will be noted by the ECU, which will then cut the power. Changing the filter might well solve your problem.

Hi Again,

Well, I changed the fuel filter today, I had changed it about six months ago, when I had my last engine / fuel related problem.

As I hoped it was nice and clean, with no sediment in the bottom of the filter housing.

I'm still using the car daily, and it hasn't cut out for a couple of weeks, but I'm not diving it hard.
I'll let you know the results of the Lexia diagnostics, when I get round to it.

I'm half tempted to just put a fuel pressure regulator in, and see if it improves it at all?
