hi guys i need a little help, (well lots of help but its my 1st proper car after owning 2 fords thank god for duck tape)
ive just got a Mreg (95) 405 td estate and know sod all about it, yeah
at last i can get rid of my rust bucket erm i mean lovely ford escort
(17yrs old and still gets 40+ mpg) but theres a few things ive
noticed that dont seem right.
the lights are rubbish. low beam the dash lights up but outside u can
hardly tell the lights are on and for main beam its weak. My old
escort seems brighter on low beam then the 405 is on main. (the high
beam works fine).
is this just the lights bulbs need replacing or sounds like something
more serious??
also driving it the other night the head lights flickered a bit and
the lights illuminating the dash right hand side of the dials (the speedo and temp gauge) dimmed and came back on!!! any ideas on cause and a solution.
the central locking doesn;t work properly, it locks but doesnt unlock
the right hand side doors all the time. ive been told this is a common
problem (the back lock jamming) and to live with it cos its expensive
to take all the locks and motors apart to fix, does anyone know any
different????
There is an anoying clicking noise from behind the dash roughly where
the glove box is. If the heating is set on recirculation, the
clicking stops but put it back on out side air and in less then a
minute it starts any ideas??? more importantly any solutions??? it was
driving me mad till i worked out how to stop it cos theres no radio
yet.
and today the heating stoped working completely, well the fan did. you select the fan blowers seting and it kinda whines but no hot air comes out. it was working fine until then
last but no means least new keys. ive had a little accident and now
ive only got one left and thats not in a very good shape (slightly
bent and the blipper case is cracked and broken). Is it case of going
to my local pug dealer and selling my kidneys or is there some where
cheaper?? (it has remote central locking and alarm off the blipper)

Are your light grey or yellow in brigth daylight (lights switched off). If they look dirty, you might want to try unclipping the headlamp lens and giving the internals a wipe. If the reflectors are yellow (chrome reflector faded), then replacemnt is the only option.
As a cheap attempt you may want to try oiling the jammy lock, might just loosen up the mechanism.
I think the clicking noise is a stepper motor which diverts the air valve. Is your diverter button a switch or manually operated via a cable. If the former, then I suspect stepper motor gear mechanism is slipping/clicking.
Your heater fan not working could be attributable to a faulty/blown resistor pack for controlling speed on heater fan.
If your keys electronics are still working, you can buy the key case for the from a pug dealer for about 4 quid. However, if the electronics are damaged you will shelling out £80 for a new key.

Check the earths on the headlights are corrosion free, the spades are tight and they are bolted to the body securely.
And that the lenses are clean inside and out.

well ive fixed the heater blower, stupid idea to put wires in the foot well were pasengers can kick them loose (which just what the missus had done). plugged in again and absolutly fine.
Damm thing clicks all the time now, not even putting it on recirc and turning the a/c on gives me peace. any further ideas before i rip out the glove box to hit it very hard ????
The lights are fine now it amazing what a little tweak and lots of wd40 can do for a car
hurray just my keys and a service to go mmmmmm i might get away just selling one kidney to pay for it!!!
