Xantia strut tops

I want to keep running my Xantias for as long as I can, so I was looking at what's still available from Citroen.

Strut tops are obviously a weak point. The ones that fit my (Hydractive) car are 5271 F0 & 5271 F1, and unsurprisingly, these are NFP (no longer supplied). However, according to Citroen Service, the earlier ones (5271 E2 and 5271 E5) are.

The transition date is 29/11/98, so AFAIK, not long after the launch of the series 2.

Does anyone know the nature of the change, and hence whether it's possible to modify old to suit new ?
