Hi all
I've got a 1992 205 GRDT. The car has run really well but it wouldn't start this morning. Traced the problem to a fuel leak from the fuel filter housing, which seems to have previously been bodged with some silicone around the base.
Does anyone know the best place to source one of these? I've tried eBay and the usual classic Peugeot sellers but not having luck.
Alternatively, has anyone tried other options? Universal fuel filters, for example? Hoping for advice from someone who has tried this before going for it.
Thanks

Re: Peugeot 205 TD Fuel Filter Housing
This is a very common issue now.. Has the filter been sealed up around the base in the vicinity of the thermostat? A little white thing that pokes out of the LH side as you look at it? This is the usual place they leak... They are hard to fix as the diesel fuel makes it hard to get a good bond with any sort of sealant although Araldite on a very carefully cleaned housing sometimes works, as does GRP resin...
These filters were used on all later PSA 1.9TD vehicles and a scrapyard may yield one from a scrap 306, 405, 406, Xantia, ZX and so on and so forth. The filter fitted to the PSA 2.1TD XUD11 engine looks similar but is taller... It would work but it might not fit under the bonnet.
Alternatively it can be bypassed with a generic diesel filter but it must be a high quality one to both filter effectively and to flow enough fuel.

Re: Peugeot 205 TD Fuel Filter Housing
Turbo 205 engines devoid of the 'top hat' filter with the white thermovavle. The reason being you'd need new hoses to connect the oil cooler given the location specifically the top hose. PSA did not want to design another hose so they 'reverted' the turbo engines fuel filter to an earlier design. I looked into this extensively during my ownership.
Replacement of a good quality housing (if its the one behind the battery) is easy. Obtain a good filter head with a built in primer 'button' and you can use screw on filters. I did this for 7 years without issue.
I suspect your filter is behind the battery area. It will probably be a tall thin cylinder yes ? With a button on top and a through bolt with a hex head.
205'd without turbo have the 'top hat' assembly from 1993 approx. Previous to that its a choice of two, one mounted on the bulkhead with coolant pipes to it (nasty to be honest) and the other type sits on the offside front wing around the suspension strut area. Choice of Lucas/Bosch filtering. A bit messy to change the Lucas one as its in the middle like a sandwhich.
To be honest a picture of what you actually have would help a *lot* as there is a lot of scope here to change to other parts.

Go on-line to Purflux filters:
http://www.purflux.com/en/catalogue/onl ... logue.html
They list both filter elements and complete filter units.
Purflux units and parts for most available at any decent motor factor/diesel specialist.
Just a suggestion.

Re: Peugeot 205 TD Fuel Filter Housing
For what is worth, the reason there's no 'top hat' filter on the TD 205's is the cooler hoses mainly. The N/A 205 D does not have an oil cooler which is why that housing will fit.
This is what I put on mine, simple as easy spin on filters. Be aware you'd need to obtain some banjo bolts/washers etc as well. Mine had a primer button in the 'head' though itself. I suspect these will still be there if you search. Ignore the veg related things about it. Filters are also cheap.

If in doubt, need to see a pic of your filter ideally your engine bay. If your glowplug relay is near the filter this may not work, TD models usually have it tucked under the nearside wing however not near the battery / strut tower area.

Re: Peugeot 205 TD Fuel Filter Housing
Hi CitroJim,
You saved my Pug! I've had my 205 Mardi Gras for 30 years and still finding things I need to know about it. Spent ages fiddling with the cold stat adjuster as didn't know there was a leak. Found out that I needed to pressurise the fuel line using the bulb pump to see where the leak was. All fuel lines were OK, but noticed puddle under car and then saw I had the very problem you have so precisely described the fix for. Used Araldite around the white cross thing at the base of the fuel filter pot and it worked a treat. I even got a bonus in leaving the water detector wire unplugged as the warning light's been coming on and going off all the time for years.
Thanks for being so generous in sharing your expertise - really appreciated.
Keith

Re: Peugeot 205 TD Fuel Filter Housing
I hereby motion for the Sainthood of CitroJim, hereon in to be referred to as Saint Jim of Eastment, Patron Saint of PSA automobiles.
(Honestly couldn't imagine what this forum, and Cit/Pug ownership would be like without Jim's knowledge and generosity in sharing said knowledge. Can only presume there'd be far fewer 80s-90s Frenchies still running around.)
Also, if anyone does need a top-hat filter housing I might have one or two spares left that were not leaking at time of "harvesting". Would both be from c1997 Xantia TD's
