Tyres with best EU ratings for C5 X7

Unread post by osx »

Have decided to continue buying tyres based on EU ratings as I mainly do motorway miles and all three ratings (economy, wet grip and noise) are relevant.

Any suggestions as I would like to try different ones to the Three A P606 (C,B,72) I had previously.

Just out of interest I did some comparisons with a simple simulator to see what the differences in the ratings mean

I go

WET Grip
Economy
Noise

No point having done cheep miles quietly if some (-expletive removed-) slams his brakes on tailgating on the motorway and you need to swerve around him and spin out or take him up the rear is there :)

As such I like Continentals s or Michelin

Don't think there are more than a couple of models with better wet grip (A)

Looking for something <70dB

Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance A,A,69 seems to be the best option but if I can get something close (B,B,<70) for half the price I would probably go with that.

Had Rainsport 2 and 3 - forget the 3's in my opinion, wear out horribly - many have said not as good as the RS2s - but personal choice and may differ with the different wheel sizes.
For the first time, I have splashed out on the Michelin CrossClimates - Summer tyre with Winter certification.

B for Fuel Economy, A for Wet Grip and 69dB for noise!

My tyres are 225 55 17 W and these are £129 each all-in fitted.

Did you notice any difference in rolling noise or are these ratings academical?

I'm now in the search for the 19" tyres ... was thinking of getting some 2nd hand tyres, just to test for half a season or full season how they cope with the car ... I have several available options, from Kumho, to Bridgestone and Michelin, so will see in the following days what would the best value for money

The tyres ARE quieter than any others I have used on this car and let me tell you - I used to go through a set of fronts every 4-5 months! Roads here in the Country are pot hole, man hole, gutter, drain heaven, with hardly a bit of tarmac in sight - it's all course sandpaper roads where we are! I've had the lot - Pirellis, Vredestein, Avon ZR5s, Uni RS2s and 3s - until in the end I gor fed up and used Falkens as I was getting more wear out of them! Drew the line at the Chinese jobbies made out of nylon though!

So these are so far the least noisy tyres I have had and are wearing well. :-D

The problem with these ratings is that it is down to the manufacturer to do the testing and apparently nobody is policing the results.
That is why cheapo Chinese brands like Landsail have such desirable ratings - they are simply made up.
This was from a chap that owned twenty tyre depots so is presumably true.

Landsail has beaten for example Michelin in two finnish tyre tests (Tekniikan Maailma summer tire test 2011 and 2015). And they were two separate models of Landsail and Michelin on those tests, so this is not accident.

I think best chinese summer tyres are nowadays fully competitive with western tires.

If you look at DEX that is published by the ratings it indicates how much people agreed with the Euro figures.
I largely ignore the economy one, surely better economy has some sort of inverse relationship with grip. I feel the same about noise.
My roads are prity poor too, I'm still on Dunlop m+s and I need them. I chose on tread pattern and reviews rather than euro ratings.

Yep tread and wet braking for me seeing as mine used to wear badly. Always seemed to be the tyres with huge circumferential grooves that wore badly, so philosophy now is I'm paying for the rubber, so I want more of it please!

I've recently fitted Landsail 388s. Much quieter than the previous Michelins, comfortable feel (perhaps a bit lacking in feedback for some), no problems so far with wet or dry grip. DOT wear rating is good, but remains to be seen in practice. Very good prices from Camskill.
