Xantia dashboard illuminati

Post by Barry0allegro »

I know this has probably be asked so many times but how do you change the dash illumination bulbs on 1997 S1? I seem to be down to one bulb over the fuel gauge! Is it a big a job?

It can be done, but (and this is the bad news bit) as you have an S1 Xantia it means that you will probably have to take the steering wheel off! I would also suggest you get at least 40 bulbs (sorry, but I cannot remember what bulbs they are), and then replace all of them in one go. You do not want to be taking the dash board out again in 6 months time when others fail!

Most of the bulbs are capless (they do use caps, but they can be removed from them), but the two in the heater panel are capped, and the caps are very short.

Here's instructions for mk2 and mk1 dash removal and bulb replacement..i tried led bulbs but found they were too bright and the light was too spread, illuminating the other areas of the dash indicating faults. Hope this helps.

It's not a difficult task at all. Just make sure the airbag is correctly deactivated as per the guide. Also watch out when you remove the steering wheel, they come off suddenly and can slap the face.

Good warning about the steering wheel. The best trick here is to undo the nut or bolt (I cannot recall which it is) most of the way, but leave a few turns on it. That way, when it comes loose the nut/bolt will stop a smack in the face.

Exactly - It'll save yout teeth. And always set the steeringwheel in neutral position before removal.
X1 has a nut with 21 or 22 mm head. X2 have a bolt, Tx45/50 if i remember correctly.

Its always worth checking the alignment before putting the airbag back on. I got mine on and it looked straight but once on a proper straight its actually on the wonk!!
