Which c5 for high miles

Post by cowmechanic »

Going to buy new c5 , don't think I want a 1.6 hdi , couple of nice ones locally a 2.2 diesel exclusive with leather big alloys etc, also a 2.7 diesel with good spec as well v6 6 speed auto box but my head is telling me to go with a. 2.0 hdi , both cars less than 80k miles and about 5 grand, normally run cars to about 250k and then scrap , do about 30k a year , are the auto boxes reliable , like something that will at least do 40 mpg
. Don't think I would like to buy one without air suspension
. Never did figure out what was wrong with c5 that hit pot hole and wouldn't start!

If you can get it, a 2.0L 8 valve HDi engine is (when properly maintained) almost bomb proof. Very strong and reliable. I believe that taxi drivers prefer this engine, and that should tell you a lot. It is economical, but it depends on the type of driving you do; that engine is really a cruiser. If you get either the first or second variant it will have the hydro pneumatic suspension, but I believe that the X7 versions had both steel spring and hydro pneumatic options.

Currently driving a 2004 2.0hdi 110 remapped to about 140 with 240k miles , goes very well but back axle knackered, back calipers bad , leaking lds from steering box , needs hatchback struts , needs new bushing around front axle every 10000 miles or so and interior is sticky and humid , fancy a x7 but worried there not going to be as reliable and not sure about auto box

Auto box, just change the oil @ 70k-100k then they are fine, it is a "well tested" box used across the world.

HP Pumps, Struts, steering racks and lower "fuse" box are the concerns with the X7

X7 c5s.. Go for 2.0 hdi 16v. It seems the strongest.. But my opionion was going to be any.. ANY engine will do and prefer high miles if looked after..
Lot of people dislike the 1.6 16v and i used to.. But now ive got one to sample... So far at 162k its brilliant... The key is long motorway driving.. NOT stop start toen driving... Oil changes at indicated miles or sooner you cant go far wrong.. I think dpf issues are caused by town driving which is not for a derv. If this 1.6 hdi gets to 200k then ill rest my case..

ONLY exclusive models in new X7 C5 have hydraulic suspension and electronic parking nrake.. Dont be frightened of the electronic parking brake.. Its apparently a very reliable setup ive been told..

No 8 valves on the X7. You'll pay extra in the car tax and fuel costs wth the 2.2. The 2.7 is a V6 and ditto above, but will have the replacement AMVAR variable damping system integrated with the hydractive suspension and variable power steering in addition. Sticky has pointed out the things to watch out for across the range. If you are getting this as a Citroen approved car from them, I would highly recommend you take the extended warranty as it should cover you for 12 months peace of mind.

Hp pumps arent that bad to change either.. Can packup anything after 200k ... Its nothing like how it looks.. Facelift mk.1 pumps are the same too but the ecu ontop of the pump just needs swapping in the event of a change.. Ie. Ecu is car set and matched..

I once considered a c5 with 2,2 hdi. Mainly because it has balancer shafts that makes the 2,0 hdi like tractor. You can also get a 2,2 to 130 kw and 400nm of torgue with a simple remap and as it has a particulate filter it does not pour out black smoke if you hammer it hard. The downside is the fuel consumption.

I have two 2.0. 8 valve engines which until recently have proved bombproof, a 406 which is on 245k miles and still has the original clutch/DMF, injectors and head gasket, and another one in a C5 at 204k miles in similar condition. I now have an apparently unsolvable electrical problem on the 406 due to it getting very damp inside.

I would still say the the 2.0 8 valve is by far the best engine with examples for sale on ebay with 300-400,000 miles and still going well. The only problem is they only used that engine in the C5 until about 04 so if you need a newer one you are rather on your own although I would advising giving the 1.6 a miss, they seem to have more then their fair share of problems.

I've currently drove 50k in the x7 1.6hdi.
And to be fair its, taking the miles no problem.
There's a lot of talk regarding this engine being unreliable, however I don't think this is true.
Mine has never let me down, longs it gets serviced at 6k with correct oil.
It gives me about 65mpg.
As for reliability even the 2.0/2.2/2.7 could all give problems in not maintained correctly or haven't been maintained correctly.

1.6.....it is NOT the engine, it is how previous owners have looked after it and what you do to it.....

Do the correct things to it when you get it....oil, turbo feed, sump strainer etc.......and it is a good engine.

As for it being underpowered for the car, another story and a personal choice

I have to agree with this young man here!!

The 1.6 IS a bloody good compact engine, which is miss understood and features some silly little design flaws which could of been better and contribute to the issue.

Ive already said on here these 1.6s are in Volvos... How many volvos do you see with issues??? How many? None? was that...?? Yes..

The issues is the feeble injector clamp bolts and studs. They arent man enough, HOWEVER, with regular checks of the injector clamp Nuts which incedentally are a 7mm allen key head keep them nipped up and all will be good!

Im running a 1.6 16v hdi now, and yes it had a turbo by previous owners, at 100k, but im now at 163k, and still going strong! They are smooth, and for a 16v increadbly torqey and are happy to fall below 1000 rpm in 5th, they do go well, but as said, if theres a blow injector seal, and learn to KNOW what one is when its leaking and catch it immediately and you will have no problem.

Not sure how people can miss a blowing injector seal, but its quite obvious, well to me anyway. Theres no intank fuel lift pump to pack up either as Ford/PSA decided to make the engine pump larger and just that, a Pump, so it is timed, but Cambelts are SOOOOOO easy to do. Its basically a Single Cam and pump setup its nice to work on, and the turbo is just there infront of you. They are easy to change, and are not expensive if you buy a cartridge.

I think its unfair when you havent owned one to assume unreliable. I hated the 1.6, but knew I would need to move into them at some point. The current C5 was bought for 380 quid, last october IIRC, with 156k on it, Ive since then put her up to 162k, without an issue. The only thing that keeps giving me a headache is the Vac Electrovalve for the turbo wastegate, but thats because Im too stingy to buy a new electrovalve.

Give one a go, not sure how they would cope in an X7 C5 though... but in the facelift Mk.1 they manage well. I like them, from hating them but I have done research and learnt a bit about them.
