C5 caliper windback tool

Unread post by bamba »

I understand the c5 has right and left hand threaded calliper pistons , do i need a specific larger tool that suits the c5 ? I already have a right hand tool from machine mart for the back of my golf , but I'm thinking it may not be big enough to do the front of a c5. I can get a left hand the same size as my right for not much money from Machinemart.
Thanks

It's been a good few years since I last changed the pads on my old C5 but I didn't need the special tool. I was able to use a broad screwdriver from the side to carefully push against the edges of the slots and wind the pistons back in.

My brother got me a windback tool for my birthday. I think it is safe to say that it will do most cars out there.

I have a wind back tool which has a left and a right threaded handle, which is ideal for C5s. Though I have got away with using a screwdriver and a G-clamp before I bought this.

Have you a link/make for your's Chris?
Some of the kits only have the option of one wind-back direction so you need to buy additional bits for the other direction.

This is the set I have Steve, it does the job just nicely.

I've got a virtually identical kit - it's got all the same bits in it but cost a lot less than the Sealey one. I've used it on my X7 with no problems.

I didn't even need the G-clamp.

I don't think I'll be rushing out to buy one of the special tools.

Thanks Chris.

Just had new discs, pads, callipers, handbrake cables, brake pipes and exhaust done on mine :(
Cost nearly as much as I paid for the car

5 or 6 times? You must have a smaller than standard tank ...

If you are lucky guys, some of the collet keys for angle grinders fit various set ups.
I made mine for this C5. Cut a plate with a holesaw to correct Dia. Drilled 2 holes and put 2 pins through. Pins were made from a chuck key shaft. Weld the pins on one side to capture them and an old socket welded on to get your ratchet into. Zero cost and there is a Xantia type made as well for the slotted type.
Tools...........are the best thing for making.........tools. :)
