Pump for oil change

Post by osx »

Does anybody here change engine oil using one of those small electric pumps? Seems like an easy way to do it, but a bit skeptical if you can actually remove all the old oil this way.

I dont but i want to, ive heard people can get all the oil out no problem when using them and if i had to do one oil change in 4 properly this would still save a massivr amount of time, i like to do my gearbox and engine oil every 6 months and that comes around quickly.

Not an electric one, but I do have one of those hand pumped vacuum bottles designed for this purpose. I tend to use it when an oil change comes around in the middle of the winter and I don't want to be crawling around on the ground. Also handy for cars with really awkward to get at sump plugs.

Have taken the plug out after using the vac drain and have never had any oil come out afterwards save for a couple of drips.

Also saves having to transfer the oil from the drain pan to a transfer bottle to take it to the recycling centre as you can just take the whole thing and dump the contents in the bin, no mess, no fuss.

Handy knowing exactly how much came out as well as I've found a few cars where the rated sump capacity was actually miles off.

What about the oil filter - can it be changed from the top without having to crawl under the car? The whole point is to avoid doing that.

I can on my 2.0HDi Berlingo. I use one of the 5 litre Sealey drain pumps. My experiments have shown it gets all the oil out - I've taken the sump plug off and seen if there's any oil left on two occasions and there has been none.

I use a 6 litre manual vacuum pump, it works on most of the cars here at home but on some cars you might have to find a smaller diameter pipe to stick down the dipstick tube. I can do my X7 oil and filter without having to get under the car or kneel down at all. It also makes it possible to do an oil change within 5 minutes ! I have, in the past, come home in fading light and done an oil change on the wife's Clio before it gets dark and without any effort :)

Not sure about on the C5 as I've never worked on one. Xantia it's easily reached from above though (even if you do wind up swearing at the hydraulic pump a bit), that's an XUD lump though, not sure how different the layout of the later engine is.

What annoys me about the Xantia is that the oil filter is horizontal so you always spill quite a bit of oil and have to clean it up afterwards. Saab has the filter near enough vertical (threaded end up) so the spillage there is far less and is easily caught with a couple of rags. Well, except for the time I dropped the filter anyway...

Same on the Berlingo. I crack the filter off with a pair of oil filter pliers until it's hand - tight then get a carrier bag, put it over the filter completely and unscrew it like that. It catches most of the spillage.

That's a really good idea, Ben...will give that a try when I next do the Xantia's one. Need to check my notes actually as it must be nearly due an oil change now I'm thinking about it...

In preparation for the first oil/filter change this weekend I had a look under the bonnet this morning to see if the filter is accessible from the top but couldn't see anything i could reach easily. Where exactly is it? If i have to crawl under the car i would rather pay a fiver and have it done with some other jobs.

Front face of the engine, slightly left of centre line as you look at the front of the engine, part number 25.

Image

It has a black plastic top to it and you'll need a 27mm socket or spanner to undo it. It takes a replaceable element inside. Info based on a DW10BTED4 engine.

Thought that was the diesel filter ;-). Easy to change then. So remove old oil - replace filter - add new oil -- done? Any other steps?

Start the car to check what you've done ... if it leaks, repeat the procedure ... :D

The diesel filter should have a few pipes coming out of the top of it.

There should be an O ring with the new oil filter to replace the one on the housing. Yours will probably take a (part number) 1109CK oil filter, there are other filters of the same size but they have less filter material in them so aren't as suited to the longer change intervals. If you undo the oil filter housing a bit you should notice a cut-out in the threaded portion - I presume it's to allow air into the housing to allow any trapped residual oil to flow back down through the housing and into the sump as opposed splurging out all over the side of the engine once the airtight seal is broken :-D
